An inquiry conducted among the members of fraternities at Dartmouth by Professor C. H. Forsyth, of the Department of Mathematics, has revealed an average annual expense account of $1342 per student. Professor sor Forsyth selected representatives of various fraternities to reach directly as many members of the fraternities as possible, requesting them to make personal estimates of their expenses for the college year.
The expense accounts submitted ranged from $600 for one man to $3000 for another. The average of the greatest number of students is close to $1200, the one estimate of $3000 raising the general average to the sum of $1342 reported. Of the 569 men interviewed 416 showed annual expenses of from $1000 to $1500 inclusive. Only 38 men stated their expenses to be less than $1000, and of these 24 men were in the two lower classes. Beyond the $1500 mark 115 men placed their expenses, 25 men estimating $1600, 20 men $1700, 21 men $1800 and 19 men $2000. Nine men gave estimates of $2500.
