On January 14, 1923, Henry B. Thayer, president of the American Telegraph and Telephone Company, had the honor of carrying on the first official telephonic wireless conversation between America and England. It is reported that his voice was perfectly audible, but comment was made on his American accent. Mr. Thayer, in his historic message, expressed an opinion that if such possibility of long distance communication had existed in 1775 trouble between the two countries might have been avoided, evidently forgetting that on the 19th day of April, 1775, according to Mr. Emerson, the embattled farmers at Concord Bridge were able to fire a shot "heard around the world."
