JUNE, 1928

The highlight of the baseball season to date is the last minute victory of the Green over Boston College at Hanover May IS. After losing to Penn, Harvard and Columbia on successive days and on the home diamond Jeff's forces took the measure of the strong Boston team in a last-inning rally, 7-6. Aided by the wildness of the opposing pitcher Dartmouth put three men on bases with two out. A base on balls forced in the tying run, and when Lane singled "the ball game broke up" with the Green on the long end of a close score. Fusonie and Lane have been Coach Tesreau's mainstays in hitting. Breckenridge, a sophomore, has justified early season promise by his pitching. Capt. Van Riper, Harris, Marsh and Hollstrom are the other varsity hurlers.

Dartmouth 8 Springfield 10

Springfield Y. M. C. A. College scored a 10-8 victory over Dartmouth in a closely contested game at Springfield April 24. Three Green pitchers, Marsh, Hollstrom, and Harris were unable to stem the tide of hits and the infield, showing the lack of outdoor practice, did not give any of the pitchers good support.

Dartmouth 12 Boston College 9

The following day the Green defeated B. C. at Boston in a game featured by heavy hitting on both sides. Breckenridge started on the mound and hit a home run with a man on base. Jeremiah, second baseman, opened the ninth for Dartmouth with a texas leaguer. He scored on a single by Paige and another single by Moran, together with a wild pitch, brought in two runs and a victory.

Dartmouth 10 Brown 5

Dartmouth batters put a stop to the all-season winning streak of the Brown baseball team at Hanover May 9. Rawlings, the Bruin pitcher who started the game, had an individual record of twenty-three innings without being scored upon. Hollstrom held the Brown batters scoreless for four innings and lasted through a barrage which brought in five runs until the ninth, when Breckenridge relieved him and retired the side in order. The Green had collected its ten runs by this time, chiefly through the timely hitting of Walsh, star short stop. Rawlings was relieved by Ford, of Brown, in the second inning.

Dartmouth 2—Pennsylvania 4

In its first quadrangular league game of the season Dartmouth was defeated by Penn, 4-2, at Hanover May 11. This game and the one with Harvard the following day were athletic events of Spring House Parties. Capt. Van Riper started pitching for the Green but weakened in the fifth inning and was replaced by Breckenridge. Penn scored two runs, a margin sufficient to bring victory, in the fifth.

Dartmouth B—Harvard8—Harvard 16

Harvard's strong baseball squad took the measure of Dartmouth May 12 in a heavy hitting game, 16-8. Lord, of the visitors, was too much for the home team with his two home runs, two doubles, and a single out of six times at bat. Lane and Harris both hit home runs for Dartmouth, but a late rally in the eighth inning could not overtake the long Harvard lead.

Dartmouth 7 Columbia 10

Playing a postponed league game Columbia overcame an early Dartmouth lead to pull the game out of the fire at Hanover May 14. Leading at the start of the seventh inning 5-2 Dartmouth fell before a heavy hitting rally by Columbia featured by two home runs. Harris was relieved in the eighth by Van Riper who was replaced by Marsh in the ninth.

Dartmouth 7 Boston College 6

The losing streak disappeared May 15 when the local team defeated Boston College 7-6. It was close all the way and the most interesting game of the season to watch. With the score 6-5 in favor of B. C. and two out, in the last of the ninth Bob Harris went to bat as a pinch hitter and knocked out a double. McNulty the Boston pitcher, then showed a wild streak and passed the next three Dartmouth batters forcing in Harris with the run which tied the game. Shea went into the box for B. C. and Lane connected for a single which brought in the winning run. Myles was the leading hitter of the day with two singles and a home run in five times at bat. Van Riper started the game for Dartmouth and, after a bad first inning, he pitched good ball until he was replaced by Breckenridge in the eight inning.

Dartmouth 0 Brown 0

In a scoreless five-inning game halted by rain Dartmouth and Brown pitchers battled at Providence May 19. Breckenridge allowed only one hit in the five innings and the Brown pitcher held the Green batters hitless.
