CLASS OF 1903
At the Dartmouth Alumni Association dinner in New York on January 18, Ray Brown, Lewis Haney, "Kid" Cohen, and "Bolz" French represented 1903. Ray was heard to murmur, "1903 has quality if not quantity."
Two dynamic forces nearly met. "Billy" Grant hurried East on important business, arrived in Boston, and called Ned Kenerson Ijy phone. Ned with bag in hand had just twenty-eight minutes in which to catch the Florida Express. Al Priddy served as substitute for Ned, and we still have our two giant forces.
The Selection Board in Washington has announced the promotion of Herbert L. Kelley to Capt. Med. Corps, U. S. N. None other than our old classmate "Kel!" Four gold stripes and well earned! Congratulation, "Kel," from 1903. After graduating from the Johns Hopkins Medical School, "Kel" attended and graduated from the Naval Medical School in Washington. He then saw service afloat and ashore in various parts of the world. While in the Phillipines he was at one time medical officer aboard a torpedo flotilla which cruised to the Southern Isles and nearly became non-existent because of typhoons. At Vera Cruz "Kel" was in the first landing party which took good care of the snipers lodged in the buildings along the streets leading to the wharves. Then followed service at the Mare Island Navy Yard on the west coast, Paris Island, headquarters of the U. S. Marine Corps during the World War, Chelsea Naval Hospital, then a post on the Virgin Islands, and during the last two years his service has been at the Santiago Naval Hospital as chief of surgery.
Report from Hanover has it that more of the old landmarks are disappearing. Old buildings are rapidly giving way for better and more commodious structures. Butterfield, on the steps of which our freshman picture was taken, long since gave way to the Library. Sanborn Hall is practically demolished, and now Culver Hall is on its way. If Culver had no architectural beauty she housed departments presided over by such personalities as "Clothespins" Richardson, "Type" Hitchcock, and "Bobby" Bartlett, three noted and dearly loved professors of our time. The old gray and bald heads returning for their Thirtieth Reunion in 1933 will need guides in their perambulations. How about it, some of you fellows, who have never awakened from your Rip Van Winkle sleep and regraduated from the New Dartmouth?
