Two additions to available scholarship funds have recently been received by the College. The Dartmouth Women's Club of Boston, organized chiefly for the purpose of raising money to be added to the scholarship funds of the College, has sent $500 to the Trustees for such use as they might designate in assisting needy undergraduates. Organized in April, 1930, the Dartmouth Women's Club (originally called the Dartmouth Matrons' Club) has sponsored various activities, including concerts and dances by the Musical Clubs and Barbary Coast orchestra in Boston, for the' purpose of raising funds. The membership now numbers over three hundred. The $500 which has already been given is the first payment into the fund, which is to be called "The Dartmouth Women's Club Fund," a rotating loan fund without interest.
The second addition to scholarship funds is the bequest of Sally M. Merrill, New York city, who provided in her will that $10,000 should be given to Dartmouth to establish the Charles E. Merrill Scholarship in memory of her husband, Charles E. Merrill, of the class of 1869. Income from this fund will be used for a scholarship to be awarded annually on the same basis as the awards of the Morrill Allen Gallagher and the Justin H. Smith Scholarships, the most highly prized awards now available for undergraduates. Mrs. Merrill died in the fall of 1931.
