For the first time in five years of movie making in Hanover the Dartmouth film service, which furnishes 16 mm. movies to Dartmouth alumni clubs, is producing a student-written and acted scenario. The picture now being made is directed by Prof. Warner Bentley, coach of the players. The scenario for the movie was written by E. L. Brown '34, W. I. Riegelman '35, and W. Shulberg '36 under the supervision of Prof. E. B. Watson, teacher of play writing. S. D. Brown '34, an experienced photographer, is in charge of the cameras used in the movie. The director of "Dartmouth College News," the alumni film service sponsored by the Secretaries Association, is S. C. Hayward, secretary of the College. About 11,000 feet of movies of a variety of Dartmouth activities, equivalent to 26 reels of 400 feet each, have been produced and distributed to alumni clubs since 1928. The films are all silent, 16 mm. size.
Director Bentley selected the cast of characters before exams in order to make some shots during the exam period and Carnival as called for by the scenario of the new production. There are four principal parts in the play, the story of which concerns the activities of undergraduates preparing for and during exams, getting ready for Carnival, with scenes of Carnival events and after the guests have departed. The part of a senior, a skier and member of Cabin and Trail, is played by Emerson Day '34. E. D. Rogers '35 plays the role of a junior and member of the Carnival committee. The part of a sophomore, a member of the varsity hockey team, is taken by W. L. Powers '34. W. S. Cummings '34 is cast as the freshman, a heeler on the Dartmouth and general errand boy and goat of the other three characters. Cumming's father and mother, who visited him at Carnival, are played by Dan C. Richardson '91 and Mrs. N. E. Gilbert.
All scenes in the new film will be taken by March 1 when editing and titling will begin. The completed movie will be ready for showing early in April.
