Following a special service at the Casque and Gauntlet house, the body of Michelet was accompanied home to Washington, D. C„ by his father, Simon T. Michelet, who had been at the bedside of his son when he died. Funeral services were held at Washington on Friday afternoon, March 16, with Dr. Roy B. Chamberliri, director of the Dartmouth chapel, officiating. Six members of Palaeopitus—David T. Hedges, Philip J. Glazer, Carl B. Hess, Thomas D. Hicks, C. Raymond Hulsart, and Wilbur L. Powers—acted as pallbearers, and the senior delegations of Casque and Gauntlet and the Psi Upsilon fraternity attended the services in a body.
In wiring the news of Michelet's death to the alumni of Washington, President Hopkins expressed the deep grief of the entire Hanover community at the untimely end of the undergraduate leader. "The resident College," he said, "suffers beyond expression in the loss of this fine scholar, great athlete, and outstanding leader among undergraduates."
The recent award of a Rhodes Scholarship had brought to a climax the long series of honors which Bob Michelet had won first at Central High School in Washington, then at Mercersburg Academy, and finally at Dartmouth. As president of Palaeopitus, president of his class for three years, Senior Fellow, Phi Beta Kappa student, captain of track, and veteran football star, he was unanimously recognized as the oustanding man in College and as a leader to whom responsibility could always be entrusted. In his freshman year, he captained the yearling football team, won his track numerals, and was awarded the William S. Churchill Prize as the outstanding member of his class.
Michelet played guard on the varsity football team for three seasons, and was prominently mentioned for All-American and All-Eastern honors last fall. He was one of the best weight men in the history of Dartmouth track, and his ability won him the captaincy of that sport this year. He was president of Green Key last year, and was a member of Psi Upsilon and Casque and Gauntlet.
In high school and at Mercersburg, Michelet distinguished himself as a scholar and as a member of the football and track teams. At Mercersburg he was chosen as the typical student of that academy.
Bob Michelet Whose death on March 14 saddened the entire College.
