American Plays Printed 1714-1830. A Bibliographical Record" compiled by Frank Pierce Hill '76, has been published as a volume of 152 pages by the Stanford University Press. Mr. Hill in his preface states that his compilation is based primarily upon two earlier lists, but that it does contain for the first time plays known to have been written and published between 1814 and 1830 by (1) American authors, (2) Foreign authors living in America, and (3) American authors living abroad. The list will be especially valuable as it indicates the known location of the plays in some of the larger libraries in the United States. This valuable bibliography is arranged in three parts, (1) Lists of authors and anonymous titles, (2) a title list, and (3) a chronological list. The only Dartmouth graduate whose works are listed in this Bibliography is David Everett of the class of 1795, author of "Daranzel or the Persian Patriot" Boston 1800, and "Slaves in Barbary" a drama in two acts. Everett is the author of the well-known quotation
"Large Streams from Little Fountains Flow, Tall Oaks from Little Acorns Grow." Listed in this Bibliography is another play of interest to Dartmouth men, the author of which is unknown, "The French Revolution including a story, founded in fact, of Leontine and Matilda, writen (sic) and exhibited in the United Fraternity at Dartmouth College 1790."
