Trustees Meeting
May 1934

The election of Prof. Frank W. Garran as Dean of the Thayer School of Civil Engineering, the granting of leave of absence to fifteen members of the faculty, and the consideration of numerous undergraduate matters comprised the main items of business for the Trustees of the College at their annual spring meeting held in Parkhurst Hall on April 4.

Professor Garran, the new Dean of Thayer School, succeeds Raymond R. Marsden, who is on leave of absence for the current academic year. He has been at Dartmouth since 1929, and was elevated to a full professorship last June. Before coming to Dartmouth, Dean Garran taught engineering at Norwich University, the University of Arizona, and the College of Charleston.

Leave of absence for the remainder of the present academic year was granted to Robert P. Lane, assistant professor of Industrial Society, who has gone to Washington to do special work for the Central Statistical Board; and to Harold J. Tobin, instructor in Political Science, who has been ill.

Leave of absence for the entire academic year 1934-35 was voted to Homer P. Whitford, assistant professor of Music, and to Irving E. Bender, assistant professor of Psychology.

Leave of absence for the first semester of the academic year 1934-35 was granted to Andrew J. Truxal, assistant professor of Sociology, and Artemas Packard, assistant professor of Art. Professor Truxal will devote his leave to the preparation of a new course on the development of the dominant social institutions in western civilization.

Leave of absence for the second semester of the academic year 1934-35 was voted to Harry E. Burton, professor of Latin; William K. Stewart, professor of Comparative Literature; Ralph P. Holben, assistant professor of Sociology; Frank E. Brown, assistant professor of Public Speaking; Jose M. Arce, assistant professor of Spanish; Churchill P. Lathrop, assistant professor of Art; John Hurd Jr., instructor in English; and Milton V. Smith, instructor in Political Science.

The spring meeting was attended by all the Trustees except Governor Winant of New Hampshire and Henry B. Thayer of New Canaan, Conn. Those present included President Hopkins; John R. McLane of Manchester, N. H.; Lewis Parkhurst of Winchester, Mass.; Clarence B. Little of Pembroke, N. H.; Morton C. Tuttle of Boston; Edward W. Knight of Charleston, West Virginia; William R. Gray of Hanover; William W. Grant of Denver, Colo.; Philip S. Marden of Lowell, Mass.; and Victor M. Cutter of Newton, Mass.
