The Dartmouth varsity cross country team faces a dearth of material this fall. Coach Harry Hillman is seriously considering asking anybody who has ever walked four miles (walk don't run) successfully to come out for the team. Steward Whitman, star distance runner on the track team last spring, is the lone ace up Harry's sleeve.
Coach Jeff Tesreau has already issued his call to the baseball nine to report for practice. Several varsity ballsters were with Jeff all summer playing on his Bethlehem team and will report ready for play. There is a strong possibility that Dartmouth will meet Holy Cross in the latter part of September for a game at Worcester. Which shows that winning the Intercollegiate pennant is a year-round task now.
President Hopkins is a constant spectator at football practice and keeps well posted on the progress of the team and the players. We remember well his standing in a pouring rain the night before the squad left for the Harvard game last fall, even after the floodlights were turned on for late evening practice.
Eddie Chamberlain joined the Dartmouth coaching staff this fall and will coach the jayvee squad in the lessons he absorbed as a member of the varsity last year. If Eddie can impart his own ability at passing, running and kicking, the jayvees will turn the varsity upside down.
