Dartmouth—Harvard Game
November 1936

After a slow start in the first period inwhich the Dartmouth Indians were able toscore but one touchdown on some brilliantindividual running by little Warren King, the Big Green stepped away from Harvardin the second quarter to trounce the Crimson, 26-7, for the third straight victory forthe veteran senior gridsters over the Cambridge foes.

Although it is, at best, only a matter ofopinion, the Green varsity seemed to lackfire during the first half and failed to showeither the defensive strength previouslydisplayed against Holy Cross or the offensive drive the Big Green followers knew theDartmouth eleven possessed.

It was only when Harvard recoveredJohnny Handrahan's fumbled-punt lost inthe sun that the famed Dartmouth forwardwall began to realize that Harvard was notto be taken lightly. With this realization soforcibly displayed, the Big Green frontierwent to work under its own goal posts anddrove the Harvard eleven back 18 yards inthree plays.

From this point on, the Dartmouth teamtook on a new attitude and played worthyfootball. The blocking became hard andclean and the tackling likewise superior.

Harvard's line was well drilled againstthe straight off-tackle power plays of CoachBlaik's Warner system, but at a sacrifice toa glaring defensive weakness against theDartmouth reverse. On this play, rangingfrom reverses on fake kicks, the "Statue ofLiberty" play, and expertly executed fakesby fullback Handrahan, sophomore BobMacLeod, King, Phil Conti and GordonClark found the Harvard ends easy marksfor their end sweeps.

Dartmouth also displayed a forward passing attack that Harvard was unable to copewith effectively. Fred Hollingworth to MacLeod proved to be one of the best combinations the Big Green has shown on Soldiersfield in three years. Hollingworth wasfortunate, in that his line was holding admirably for his cut back and passes, and atno time was the junior aerial artist hurriedwhile he picked his receiver and bulletlikepasses directly into the Crimson secondary.
