PREPARATION FOR MARRIAGE

By Ernest R. Groves '03, Greenberg Publisher, New York, 1936, 124 pp. $1.50.

To the reader familiar with the writings of Professor Groves on Marriage and the Family, this book will offer little that is new. However, that is not the audience to whom the author addresses his simple but direct words. From the classroom where he was a pioneer in giving courses on Marriage, he here enters the marketplace to speed up the process which he hopes will culminate in having all people approach marriage with the determination to supplement romantic love with intelligent prevision of the demands which marriage makes on the personalities and adjustments of individuals.

The range of topics covered in this small handbook Sharing Confidences, Health and Heredity, Birth Control, Pre-Marital Examinations, Financial Problems, is so wide in scope that all the author can hope to do is to suggest the nature of the problems, to summarize the latest scientific, medical and psychological facts relating to each, and to point the reader to sources from which additional services can be procured. It is perhaps redundant to say that with his wide experience in the field, Professor Groves knows what problems should be emphasized for the achievement of success in the marital relationship.
