Commencement Dates

ACTION TAKEN by the Board of Trustees at its fall meeting in Hanover October 26-27 sets the date of Commencement exercises for Sunday afternoon, June 18. The week-end program will begin with meetings of the Board of Trustees and Alumni Council Thursday evening, June 15. Reuning alumni and parents and guests of seniors will arrive Friday, June 16, when the first public event on the Commencement program will be the Class Day exercises. The reception to alumni, faculty, seniors, and friends by President and Mrs. Hopkins will be held Friday evening followed by the Commencement ball.

The alumni meeting customarily held at noon on Saturday will this year probably be held late Saturday morning, June 17, followed by an outdoor buffet luncheon at noon and the baseball game in the afternoon. Class reunion dinners and Players' Show are scheduled for Saturday evening. The Baccalaureate exercises will be held Sunday morning.

Owing to the attractiveness of an outdoor vesper service the Commencement exercises will be held late Sunday afternoon. or early Sunday evening instead of Monday morning as in recent years. The Trustees had previously considered the added convenience for many parents and alumni of holding the exercises on Sunday thus planning the -Commencement week-end to run from Friday noon to Sunday evening (June 17-19) rather than Friday evening to Monday noon.

It is not known now whether or not the outdoor auditorium in the Bema, where the trees were almost entirely destroyed, can be used again in June for baccalaureate and graduation exercises. In case Commencement is held outdoors, either in the Bema or in another location, there will be plenty of space available for alumni and friends in addition to parents of seniors. The crowded seating conditions in Webster Hall would limit the attendance for the exercises there to the graduating class, faculty, and parents of graduates.

The musical clubs concert may be given Sunday evening and concerts by the Dartmouth band will be given every day during the Commencement week-end.
