A letter under date of March 23 from A. W. French of the department of civil engineering of Worcester Polytechnic Institute contains the following:
"I want to thank you for your letterwith statements about 'Chary' Smith.Hope he may return to health. The old'9l gang is coming down the west side ofthe hill, and many have passed by. Thosewho remain become dearer to each other. We are all in good shape here. I will goon the retired list this June. Don't knowjust how it will seem, but know it will begood in some ways."
The Secretary made a short call on Chary in Moodus, Conn., on April 8, finding him cheerful and feeling strong. Mrs. Smith was at her work, a teacher in the Nathan Hale School, but took time out to tell the Secretary of Mr. Smith's illness. She hoped that in May they will be able to go to Chary's camp in northern New Hampshire for a few days.
