GEORGE H. CLAYTON, janitor of Parkhurst Hall ever since the building was first opened in 1911' died at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover on March 27 after an illness of two weeks. He was 83 years old, and on May 7 would have been in the employ of the College as janitor for 49 years. He was the senior member of the College's janitor corps both in years and in term of service.
In recent years Mr. Clayton had an assistant to help him with the janitorial duties in the Administration Building. He arrived at the building each morning at 6, long before the campus was stirring, and took great pride in keeping the hall of his own choice spick and span. He started with the College in 1890 as janitor of old Sanborn Hall and asked to be assigned to Parkhurst when the new building was opened in 1911. Mr. Clayton was a familiar figure on Main Street as he walked down to the Post Office each morning with his basket of outgoing mail and returned with the mail that had arrived during the mid-morning.
Mr. Clayton was a native of Wilder, Vt., and resided in Hanover for 64 years. The funeral was held at his Hanover home on March 29, with the Reverend John U. Harris officiating, and burial was in the Dartmouth cemetery.
