DARTMOUTH ENTHUSIASM, in Rhode Island and adjacent Massachusetts reached a new peak April 3 when 88 graduates, undergraduates and guests gathered at the University Club in Providence for the annual dinner of our association.
This attendance was the largest in the 32-year history of the association.
Harry Ellinger, line coach of the football team for five years, and Jack Cummings, an outstanding member of the senior class, were the speakers. Both held the undivided attention of the gathering. Interesting question periods followed the speeches of each. Ellinger outlined the football situation at Dartmouth now and presented interpretative comment as four reels of motion pictures were shown of games played last Fall. The pictures showed the Stanford and Cornell games. Cummings dwelt upon the undergraduate trends at Hanover. His review of the college year thus far, presented through the medium of headlines from the Daily Dartmouth, proved particularly effective.
R. F. Haffenreffer 3d '25, the retiring president of the association who conducted last night's meeting, called for special recognition of Asa G. Randall '92, Dr. William H. McLaughlin '94, Edward G. Carr '96 and Dr. Harvey B. Sanborn '02, who are among the most active of the older Dartmouth alumni in the vicinity of Providence. Mr. Randall, who has just retired from his position as teacher of art at the Classical High School in Prov., sat at the head table and was called upon by Mr. Haffenreffer. Mr. Randall was present when the club was organized in 1907 and has not missed a meeting since. Tribute was paid to Dr. Bryon U. Richards M'93, who died recently in Pawtucket.
Adams A. Sutcliffe '15, vice pres. of the association for the past two years, was elected pres. with Ralph H. Koelb '20 vice pres. Louis E. Grover Jr. '23 treas. and John R. Aborn '22, sec.
These officers and George Tillinghast '36, T. Reed Montgomery '18, Dr. Frank J. McCabe '05, Frank Williams '09, C. W. Haffenreffer '30, and Robert M. Saywell '33, were named to the executive committee.
