THE EDITORS WERE PLEASED this summer to receive notification from the American Alumni Council, a national association of alumni officers and editors of all colleges, that the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE had received the Grand Award—"for excellence in all departments"—in a magazine contest for which seventy-four institutions submitted entries. The competing publications were judged by Mr. J. H. Breiel, of N. W. Ayer & Son, Inc., Philadelphia, a major advertising agency. In Mr. Breiel's report on the contest he said:

"For the Grand Award, all of the magazines were completely reconsidered. The DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE was selected because, in the opinion of the judges, it came nearer to excellence in all departments than any other publication examined. It is true that the Case book, the Technology Review, and the California Monthly showed a livelier presentation from the standpoint of layout. But this advantage was overcome by the ease of readership achieved by the Dartmouth publication's excellence in typography and by its close rivalry with the Princeton publication in the matter of cover design. It was felt that the Dartmouth magazine was one which the impartial reader would pick up most readily, and one which the Dartmouth alumnus would be apt to read most thoroughly. These qualifications from a purely technical or mechanical point of view are the most desirable, i.e., quick reader attention among other publications, and good readership among those who examine the book."

Certificate presented to the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine in token of the grand awardfor "excellence in all departments" for the past year.
