THE FIRST SOCIAL ACTIVITY of the club was a fishing trip July 13 to Heald Banks, about 45 miles offshore from Galveston. Fishermen attending were Smith '18, Edson 18, Krogstad '27, Ferguson '30, Jacob '39, Power '40, Heitmann '41 and Dale '43. Rough water interfered with the fishing ambitions of several but the good sailors among us managed to catch fish enough for all. Power, visiting Houston from Portland, Maine, will now, we feel sure, put Gulf waters up against anything the Atlantic has to offer.
On the night of August 2, a group including Lull '97, Nichols '98, Smith '18, dson '18, Cravens '22, Sanders '22, Ferguson 'go, Maguire '30, and Lull '31 attended, as a Dartmouth cheering section, a wrestling match which aw the return to ouston of Gus Sonnenberg. Gus did his part by winning his match and afterwards we enjoyed a two hour bull ession with "'m at a local restaurant.
Our big event for the summer season was to be a Dartmouth picnic at Galveston Beach, Sunday, August 11, but summer vacations interfered with the attendance. Bonnie and Ray Smith with their two boys, Ella and Clarence Sanders with their three sons, Dwight Edson, son and daughter, Mary and Paul Maguire, and Ellis Gilbert were all of our group who showed up at Dartmouth headquarters on the sands. Swimming, softballing, sun-tanning, and a picnic supper with appropriate refreshments were enjoyed.
Luncheons have been held at the Texas State Hotel the first and third Monday noon of each month and have been well attended. Monday noon, July 15, we even had to order additional space to take care of an overflow crowd. Out of town guests were Allen '32 from Dallas, Gibbons '33 from San Antonio, and Power '40 from Portland, Maine. With summer vacations about over we hope to raise attendance at these luncheons. Visiting Dartmouth men drop by and join us.
