Remember the Celebration of the 55thanniversary of our graduation occurs at Hanover Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 14, 15 and 16,—less than six weeks away.
Our president, Frank Whipple, has commanded the secretary to urge each one of our fifteen surviving graduates to make a supreme effort to be present, with members of his family and that any member who finds he is absolutely unable to attend is requested to write a letter which will be read at the reunion dinner, so that every member of the class will report inperson or by letter and the Secretary heartily and strongly echoes the president's message.
The place of our reunion headquarters and tentative program will be published in our class notes in the June issue of the MAGAZINE.—Let each one of us assist in making this reunion as interesting and enjoyable as each of its predecessors have been.
Who will be there?— Without much doubt Austin, Bayley, Briggs, Brooks, Chase, Cragin, Floyd, Hovey, Weeks and Whipple; hopefully expected Adams, Allen, Hudson and Parker; regretfully doubtful, on account of sickness, "Life" Philbrick; of our non-graduates we hope to have John Clark and Frank Colby and shall at least expect letters from Dickey, Lucas, Shultz, Sturges and Whitcomb—we regret that our honorary member, Miss Helen E. Melendy, who has so regularly attended and added much to the enjoyment and success of our reunions, may be absent on account of her health.
The secretary recently received a copy of the report of the twenty-five years of service of the Engineering Foundation of which our classmate, Otis E. Hovey, is the Director. The position which Otis holds will be better understood by stating that the Engineering Foundation was established twenty-five years ago and is controlled through the United Engineering Trustees, Inc., composed of the four following engineering organizations—American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Its purpose, as described in its charter, is "for the furtherance of research in science and engineering or for the advancement in any other manner of the profession of engineering and the good of mankind"— during the twenty-five years of its service it has appropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the assistance in various researches and projects which it deemed deserving of support; we congratulate our distinguished classmate in having a position of such importance and congenial service in the profession which he has made his life's work and we believe the Foundation is also to be congratulated on having the services of such a well qualified Director.
Our class treasurer, Henry Austin, recently wrote from St. Petersburg that Florida is thawing out, the fogs and dampness are drying up and that the "sunshine" which it advertises so widely will soon become a reality. He adds that in connection with the recent annual "Festival of States" celebrated at St. Petersburg his granddaughter, Miss Judith Austin, was chosen to represent the State of Georgia as the "Princess of Georgia" in the parade which culminated the week's festival and that he had the proud and quite strenuous honor of acting as her escort, both Henry and Miss Judith had their pictures shown prominently in the Festival Edition of the St. PetersburgTimes of March 31—in behalf of the class the Secretary extends to "the Princess" a cordial invitation to attend our 55th reunion in company with her grandparents. Henry also reports that he presided at the recent annual dinner of the Florida Dartmouth Association in the absence of its president, Herbert Gage '87, who was unable to officiate on account of sickness; the attendance including ladies was sixty-eight and the speakers were Dr. Henry Silver '72, Stanley Johnson '87 and Professor Holden of the Thayer School and shown.
The obituary notice of our recently deceased classmate, Samuel M. Wilcox, appears under the Necrology Notices of this issue.
