THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES of the College, holding its annual spring meeting in Hanover on April 27, voted promotions to 16 members of the faculty, appointed 11 new faculty members for 1940-41, awarded bachelor degrees to five members of the Class of 1939, and granted leaves of absence for the next academic year to 17 faculty members. One faculty resignation, that of A. Myrton Frye as assistant professor of Philosophy, was accepted by the Board, effective at the end of the present academic year.
Eleven men were elevated to the rank of full professor. Listed with their departments, they are: Arthur M. Wilson, Biography; Clyde E. Dankert, Martin L. Lindahl, and J. Milton McDaniel, Economics; Allen R. Foley '20, History; Fred W. Perkins, Mathematics; Chauncey N. Allen '24 and Irving E. Bender, Psychology; Joseph B. Folger '21 and Alvin L. Pianca '23, Spanish; Michael E. Choukas '27, Sociology.
Five men were promoted from instructor to assistant professor as follows: Louis P. Benezet '99, Education; Richard E. Stoiber '32, Geology; Albert W. Levi Jr. '32, Philosophy; Harold M. Evans, Physical Education; John V. Neale, Public Speaking.
One full professor and five assistant professors are among the new elections to the faculty. Dr. John P. Troxell will be Professor of Industrial Relations at the Tuck School, replacing Prof. Herman Feldman who has been granted leave of absence to serve as Dean of the C. C. N. Y. School of Civic and Business Administration. The assistant professors will be Dr. Lindsay Helmholz in the Chemistry department, George L. Scott '25 in the Education department, William R. Kendall in the Music department, Dr. Francis W. Gramlich in the Philosophy department, and Dr. Malcolm C. Henderson in the Physics department.
Four members of the present senior class are among the appointees as instructors and assistants. Charles E. Wilde '40 will be instructor in Zoology, Robert Levine '40 and Kneeland Swenson '40 instructors in Chemistry, and Chester R. Berry '40 assistant in Physics. Richard A. Montgomery will also be an assistant in Physics next year.
Mid-year bachelor degrees, as of the Class of 1939, were voted to Francis S.. Bachelder, Loren J. Dilkes, David M. Lilly, Paul R. O'Brien, and Douglas G. Younger.
Leave of absence for the full academic year 1940-41 was voted to Prof. Francis A. Linville, Economics; Prof. Henry S. Odbert '30, Psychology; and Prof. John V. Neale, Public Speaking.
First-semester leave was granted to Prof. Chester H. Forsyth, Mathematics; Prof. Robert J. Delahanty, Physical Education; Prof. Andrew G. Truxal, Sociology; and Prof. Allan H. Macdonald, English.
Second-semester leave was granted to Prof. John P. Amsden '20, Chemistry; Prof. William A. Carter '20, Economics; Prof. Henry M. Dargan, English; Prof. Ralph P. Holben, Sociology; Prof. Harry P. Bell, Economics; Prof. Stephan J. Schlossmacher, German; Prof. Elmer E. Smead, Political Science; Prof. Jose M. Arce, Spanish; Prof. William D. Maynard '11, Romance Languages; Prof. Albert W. Levi Jr. '32, Philosophy.
