OUR LAST MEETING was held on the night of April 9 with John Cronin '04 as guest of honor. He was brought by one of our most recent club members, Harry Muchemore '04, who has a son in the freshman class. Muchemore is down here as superintendent of one of the largest construction jobs the Army or Navy have ever undertaken. Cronin came down since his company, Liberty Mutual, insures the men, etc. He is, I believe, General Counsel and Vice President of Liberty Mutual. He told us many stories of undergraduate life back at the beginning of the century. Sid Walker '9l was also present with many an anecdote. Art Duryea was sick and couldn't attend but Major Dean DeMerritt '12, our treasurer, presided (which amounted to getting everyone from the bar to the dining room). An interesting sidelight is that Stan Ballard '31 (graduate student) who teaches physics at the University of Hawaii and is an expert on gases, was sent over to gather gas specimens from Mauna Loa, which erupted recently. He hauled all his equipment up the mountain, past the snow to the crater where he gathered his important specimens.
Another recent arrival, Capt. Ernest Small '04, chief officer of the submarine Drayton, whose enthusiasm is as great as anyone down here for Dartmouth.
We just had word from Tom Sinding '36 who is in town with the fleet, an aviator on the S. S. Charleston. With 45,000 men and officers in town this week for a rest after maneuvers we expect there are others, but Tom is the only one we've heard from.
John Peacock recently had word of his acceptance for admission this fall. He will prove, I am sure, the outstanding young man to go to Dartmouth from Hawaii in many years. He seems to me to have everything, personality, scholarship, ambition and a very superior athlete. We hope in a small way he will make up for a few of the below-the-average ones who have gone up in the past two or three years.
There is talk of revival of the old University Club and I am investigating. I have also done some work on organizing joint meetings on football days this fall with the clubs of the colleges we play. More about that later.
