This Month

CONCLUDING THIS YEAR'S SERIES of faculty biographical sketches, we present in this issue the story of Gordon Ferrie Hull, Dartmouth's distinguished physicist, who retires this month from active teaching. Ably written by PROFESSOR STEARNS MORSE of the English Department, it appears on page 7.

Nothing in recent years in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE has stirred up so much comment and controversy as MR. QUA'S article, Old GradLooks at Siwash, in the January issue. As promised some time ago, a reply to MR. QUA'S criticism of the course Social Science 1-2 is published this month, written by the course chairman, PROFESSOR JOHN G. GAZLEY of the History Department. Turn to page 11.

Under News of the College, pages 18-23, a resume of Alumni Fund progress to date will be found, and a story on the Secretaries Association meetings along with their group picture.

When Spring Comes, page 14, is a condensation of a recent sermon by the REVEREND BOYNTON MERRILL '15, minister of the Second Church in Newton, defining the Christian attitude for America in relation to the European war.

HERBERT F. WEST'S book column, HanoverBrowsing, appears on page 15, followed on page 16 by Books by Dartmouth Men.

The Undergraduate Chair is taken over for the first time by our new student writer, CHARLES G. BOLTE '41, who will continue next year the job of summing up events and thought in Hanover each month from the undergraduate slant. See page 24.

Cover photograph is of the entrance to Streeter Hall, and is by NEWELL GREEN.

NEXT MONTH: We inaugurate a new issue in our schedule. The July ALUMNI MAGAZINE will contain a review of Commencement and reunion events, general College news, and will contain notes from reuning classes only. We hope to continue this ten-issue schedule in future years.
