Ernest R. Groves '03, professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina who includes courses on marriage in his teaching, recently issued the following rules to guide young people in their selection of a mate:
1. Don't fall in love with the first person who comes along. Meet all the young people you can before making up your mind.
2. Study your emotions as the courtship progresses. Your mate should bring out the best in you.
3. Don't judge by company manners. Every day behavior is what is important.
4. Make sure your prospective spouse isn't tiresome. If you think he's dull now, imagine what you'll have to put up with later.
5. Will he or she mature with you? If not, will this make you unhappy?
6. Can he or she "take" it?
7. Will your prospective spouse put father or mother ahead of you? Keep an eye out for apron strings.
