Council of Sixteen Men Direct Rush of Activity as Prelude To gist Annual Dartmouth Winter Carnival

THE DARTMOUTH OUTING CLUB will present its 31st Annual Winter Carnival in Hanover on Friday and Saturday, February 7 and 8.

With just one month remaining before Winter Carnival, a sixteen-man Carnival Council headed by Morton McGinley '41 returned from the Christmas recess and began an intensive program of preparation.

"Winter Sports" is the theme set by the 35-foot standing skier designed by Charles Weisker '41 for the center-of-campus snow sculpture. The massive skier is leaning on his poles in an informal pose with skis resting against his broad shoulders. Weisker, who is also serving as Director of Entertainment on the Council, is now working on structural designs with Thayer School engineers, and plans to start actual construction around February 1 with a staff of 30 or more undergraduate helpers. The "Winter Sports" theme will be followed by fraternities and dormitories participating in the annual snow sculpture contests. Douglas Wheale '41, Director of Features, is supervising all phases of sculpture activity.

GOVERNOR BLOOD TO ATTEND

Governor and Mrs. Robert O. Blood '13m of Concord, N. H., have accepted the Council's invitation to come to Hanover as special Carnival guests. Governor Blood will be one of the three judges to select the 1941 Carnival Queen from the host of Carnival dates who will come to Hanover as guests of undergraduates. Walter B. Humphrey '14, creator of the Eleazar Wheelock murals in the Hovey Grill of Thayer Hall, has also been invited to Carnival as a special guest and judge. Paul Sample '20, Dartmouth artist-in-residence, will serve as the third judge.

William Danforth '41 and Mabry Cornwall '41, Co-Directors of Outdoor Evening, are working on plans for the snow and ice Outdoor Evening setting with undergraduate designers. Director of Equipment Trumbull Huntington '42 and Charles Weinberg '42, Head Electrician, are acting as consultants on set construction. The program will be patterned on last year's Outdoor Evening show, including local skiing and skating talent as well as professional skating acts.

Maynard Riley '41, Director of Competi- tions, has been arranging skiing and skating competition for Carnival week-end. Assisting him is Edgar Hunter Jr. '38, Director of Officials. The Dartmouth skating team is attempting to repeat the Eastern Intercollegiate Speed Skating Championships which it brought to Hanover at Carnival last year for the first time. Biggest skiing competition is expected from the University of New Hampshire and Middlebury, as in the past. As yet no definite word has been received from Dartmouth's traditional Canadian rival, McGill University, as to its entrance in the Carnival meet.

It has been disclosed that a ski team from Chile will participate in Winter Carnival competition. Final arrangements are being made by the Council. This will be the first time in several years that a ski team from another continent will compete in the Carnival events. Coach Walter Prager will select a special Dartmouth ski team from his top-notch men about a week before Carnival.

Director of Personnel Stacy Hill '41 met with some 125 students at a gathering of prospective Carnival workers in Dartmouth Hall before the Christmas recess. After listing all undergraduates interested in working with the Council, Hill assigned them to separate departments of activity. During the last week of Carnival preparation workers and Council members will eat together in Freshman Commons which will serve as general Carnival headquarters.

Other members of the 1941 Carnival Council are John Bowers '41, Director of Posters and Program; Gordon Gliddon, Faculty Adviser; David McGaughey '41, Director of Police; William Mitchel '42, Director of Publicity; and members-atlarge Robert Fry '41, Peter Glenn '41, and David Nutt '41.
