The next best job to judging a bathing beauty contest would seem to be judging the degree of pulchritude at Winter Carnival. And that, friends, is what Paul Sample is doing as this is being written. In other words to Paul, Gov. Blood of N. H. and Mural-Artist Walter Humphrey '14 falls the duty of selecting the Carnival Queen.
Speaking of our folks in Hanover Al Frey tells me that Bill Carter has been granted a faculty leave of absence for the second semester. Bill expects to remain in Hanover to study in Baker Library in preparation for a projected book. Chemist John Amsden has been granted a like leave and expects to go to Chicago to study the latest research in the field of analytic chemistry.
Al further reports that Hal Bernkopf was a recent visitor in Hanover. He (Al) heard from a reliable source that Hal and Liz bartered their votes in the last election for an invitation to the Inauguration. At any rate they received one and were in Washington for the affair.
Moving down the Connecticut to Bellows Falls we find that Geo. Page has sold his paint and wallpaper business and is now a retail clothing merchant. Best of luck!
Attention all '20's in or anywhere nearBoston! Put down Saturday evening,March 15th, as a priority. On this date the'20 Club of New England holds its annualmid-winter dinner dance at the UniversityClub in Boston. Don't fail to be on handif possible. It will help Paul Richter, theguiding spirit of the junket, if you will lethim know you're going to be there.
Paul's stationery shows him to be the New England field secretary for the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies. I understand Paul has been associated with the group since July when he had charge of organizing the New Hampshire Committee.
A clipping from a Reading, Pa., newspaper lists Charlie Ashton, director of the Philadelphia agency of the Union Central Life Insurance Company, as a speaker at a large gathering of insurance men in Reading.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye!— Charlie Carter of Rock Island, Ill., is engaged to Katherine Hengen of Ottumwa, la. Here's a thumbnail sketch of Charlie's life: He attended Dartmouth College and was graduated from Cornell. He served two years in the U. S. Army with the rank of Second Lieutenant, Q. M. C. Charlie is now President of the Public Recreation Co., operating golf courses in Ottumwa, Rock Island, Cedar Rapids and Oskaloosa. At present he is supervising the construction of a municipal golf course at Burlington. It looks as though Mrs. C. will be a super-golf widow.
Roc Elliott writes that Mugs Morrill has been promoted to Asst.-V. P. of the Merchants National Bank in Boston.
Roc also comes up with some data which are a bit surprising, namely, the percent of 'so graduates who have paid dues this year is below that of the non-graduates.
This adds up to the fact that less than 50% of those receiving the MAGAZINE have done right by our Treasurer. This is the last reference to dues we are going to make in the Class Notes this year so, before you start working on your Income Tax, check to see if you are paid up and if not let your check book be your guide.
