ALUMNI TO THE NUMBER OF 500 crowded the main dining room of the Copley-Plaza Tuesday night, February 4, to hear President Hopkins and Prof. Allen R. Foley, and to pay their respects to De Ormond "Tuss" McLaughry, newly chosen football coach.
President Hopkins, it was revealed by the retiring President of the Boston Association, Lafayette R. Chamberlin 'OS, had accepted a priority chairmanship of OPM on the condition that he be allowed to keep a previously made date with the Boston alumni. In describing his work in Washington the President said: "I am exasperated at arguments that it would be better to keep what we have for a short time than to fight to keep it permanently. I am going to argue that there was never anything particularly inspiring or stimulating in a safety-first doctrine."
The President continued that perhaps it would be necessary for a time for the colleges to give up certain freedoms they had enjoyed but only on the ground that these freedoms would be returned. But no matter what, the ideals and aspirations of the College would remain free from tyranny over the mind of man.
After an introduction by Carl F. Woods '04, president of the Dartmouth Athletic Council, Tuss McLaughry made it very clear what a privilege he considered had been his in being chosen to lead the Big Green forces, by stating it was the peak "achievement of his career."
Prof. Allen R. Foley '20 of the History Department gave a delightful talk on the changes and progress in Hanover in both light and serious vein.
Music was furnished by a group of alumni.
Joseph W. Worthen '09 was elected president of the Association. Other new officers elected were Arthur T. Soule 'OB and Ben Ames Williams '10, and Robert W. Williamson '27 as vice presidents. Charles V. Raymond '30 and Paul L. Guibord '36 were reelected to the offices of treasurer and secretary respectively. Carleton J. Ward '32 was reelected as representative of the Dartmouth Outing Club of Boston.
The following were elected to the executive committee: Ordon S. Hobbs '31, Calvin B. Geary '32, James F. Woods '33, Stanley E. Neill '34, Gardner C. Cushman '35, Duncan H. Newall Jr. '36, John H. Devlin Jr. '37, William Ganter '38, Leonard J. Viens '39, Gerald Sullivan Jr. '40.
Others seated at the speakers' table were Lewis Parkhurst '78, senior trustee; Dr. Arthur H. Ruggles '02, John R. McLane '07, Dr. John F. Gile '16, Victor M. Cutter '03, and Edward S. French '06, trustees of the College.
The association looks forward with a great deal of interest to the next of the Hanover Speakers' evenings which have met with such success during the past several years.
