The annual '28 Current Events Survey conducted by Class Agent Paul Kruming has elicited a large number of replies. A study of the replies received in the four weeks preceding March 9, (the date these notes must be mailed to Hanover) showed that 63% favor lend-lease aid to Britain and an additional 12% favor it with definite limitations.

The question which provoked the most heated comments was "Let's fight now-Germany? Japan? Italy?" Eighty-nine per cent of those voting thought we should not fight anyone now. Representative comments were: "Why fight—we are not mad at anyone.". .. ."I believe we are at war with Germany n0w.".... "When we are attacked.". .. ."Let's get prepared first.". .. ."Why be stupid.". .. ."Let's fight hysteria."

An interesting letter came a few days ago from Jerry Warner, American Consul at Taihoku, Taiwan, Japan, dated February 1, but only part of it can be given here due to rigid space limitations: "We're still holding the fort in this outpost, the only remaining Americans, but the other day we got welcome word that a transfer is on the way up. I don't envy the man who will take over, for he will probably be alone, as nearly all consular wives left for the U. S. long ago. Guess some of the pioneer spirit got into Rella for she decided to stick it out. Arthur and Betty are with us too."

"Even though it has not affected you as yet, you doubtless see and hear of worsening American-Japanese relations. We hear nothing but, being in the Empire which feels so keenly every move the States make. I hate to think of the much-talked of possibility of war, because such wounds take so long and cost so much to heal. While hotheads on both sides are all for going to it with no further delay, and Japan's position worsens the longer she waits, 1 trust that more level-headed counsel will prevail on both sides. The die may have been cast by the time this reaches you."

Two years ago when everything was comparatively quiet the Naval Reserve inveigled Dr. Charlie Hazzard of Mt. Vernon, N. Y., into joining. On March 6 he was called to active duty and assigned to the Naval Reserve Hospital in Brooklyn. Only a few weeks previous he had been appointed head of the urological service at Grasslands Hospital in Westchester County. He is the first member of the class to be drawn into the war, although Capt. Norm Costello has been in the Army since leaving College.

David Josiah Ballard was born to the Bill Ballards at 3:35 A.M. on February 10, in the Hitchcock Hospital at Hanover. Bill and Elizabeth live in an old inn in Norwich, Vermont, which they fixecl up, and Bill "commutes" back and forth to his duties as Assistant Professor of Zoology at Dartmouth.

David Phelps Kimball was born to the Bill Kimballs on February 13 in the Hitchcock Hospital at Hanover. Bill and Margaret built a beautiful new home on one of the hills to the right of Main Street as you enter Hanover from White River Junction. Bill showed his engineering training by sending out a clever blueprint announcement of David's arrival.

John Howard Eile bowed into this existence on July 16, 1940 according to a belated announcement from his father, Max Eile, who added, "within two days of his birth he was registered in the class of 1962. His mother, Mildred, insists that he takes to the bottle like some of the members of 'sB." Max is practicing law at 270 Broadway, New York City.

Bob Richardson and his wife are living at 833 Quincy Ave., Scranton, Pa., and both teach at the Scranton Country Day School. Bob teaches French and Latin and supervises the Upper School.

Paul Ahlers is an executive with the Ranger Aircraft Engine Division of the Fairchild Engine & Airplane Corp., Farmingdale, Long Island.

Johnny Phillips received a letter recently from Philo Grimes on the letterhead of the Grimes Royalty Cos. of Tulsa. Philo reports that business is good but that it requires constant watching and hence he sticks pretty close to his own reservation. Johnny also sent other news items for which we are grateful, particularly for the news that Craw Pollock has been trans- ferred by du Pont's Cellophane Division from Wilmington to New York. It seems that at a dinner at the Dartmouth Club February 27 for the new football coach, Wally Carr and Chuck Bruder, both of Ridgewood, N. J., were very busy organizing a "Keep Pollock Out of Jersey Club." Chuck's last words were he was sure everyone was glad to see Craw back but that it has been so peaceful around the metropolis the last few years!

Carter Woods, Professor of Sociology at Wells College, Aurora, N. Y., has been kept busier than usual by his new job as chairman of the Wells College Committee on National Defense. In that capacity he attended a meeting of college representatives in Washington in February.

George Slawson has been keeping abreast of all the latest fashions by having been laid up for some time with influenza ... .he has now returned to his desk at Slawson & Hobbs, real estate agents, in New York City.

Sometimes people forget to tell us about important events, and so, without pointing the finger at anyone, we'll announce (with apologies for its lateness) the birth of Richard Fellows Keith to the RockyKeiths on March ao, 1939.

Barbara Buchtel was born to the HeinieBuchtels in Denver September 16, 1940 Heinie is a urologist, but still manages to slip away occasionally to ski in the Rocky Mountains.

METEOROLOGIST

Dick Learned leads an unusual life—for the past four years he has lived on the top of Mt. Washington in one capacity or another. He was a government weather observer, and now he is working for the Yankee Network installing a F. M. transmitter to serve northern New England. He says, "Fortunately or unfortunately 1 am over draft age and so will manage to stay out of the army for a while perhaps. I ski when weather and snow conditions permi t."

Dr. Jim Gillard of Muskegon, Michigan, has been qualified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and says "The baby business is perfect—one-half the town feels they will be exempt from the draft for sure if they have another baby. Personally I feel safe because of my two boys, Robert, age four, and James 111, age one."

Dick Schmelzer is busy at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N. Y., as assistant professor of English, coach of soccer and tennis, and director of the R. P. I. Players.

Ed Lockett has joined the staff o£ Fortune magazine. Ed has been a reporter in Washington for the International News Service for the past ten years. He and Mrs. Lockett will remain in Washington for the present.

On one of our frequent visits to Corn- ing, N. Y., we bumped into "Red" Myers, whom we had not seen in fifteen years, and learned that he and Frances have a son, John Bennett, born September 30, 1940. They live at 80 Westmont Ave., El- mira, and "Red" is a salesman for the Cities Service gasoline distributor.

As anticipated in this column last month, Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Robert Baldwin, of New Canaan, Conn., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Lura Maude, to Alexander PateHassell of Plainfield, N. J. Miss Baldwin attended the Sacred Heart Convent in Noroton, Conn. Art is one of the iron hats at B. Altman's emporium on Fifth Avenue, New York City.
