The following pen sketches of four 1907 lawyers, all of whom live and practice in New England, is due to the kind cooperation of Bill Smart who is himself an outstanding member of his profession in Boston and New England. The modesty which is responsible for the omission of a sketch of Bill's activity will be rectified in due course. Sketches of other 1907 lawyers in New England will be reported in this column in later issues.
John R. McLane
Is one of the outstanding lawyers of our class and we all remember he was a Rhodes Scholar in England and later was graduated from the Harvard Law School where he was an outstanding student and was on the Harvard Law Review.
John came to College from Milford, N. H., and his father was Governor of the State when he was an undergraduate. He just naturally returned to New Hampshire and located in Manchester where he now heads the well-known firm of McLane, Davis & Carleton, with offices at 40 Stark Street.
For some years now John has been a life trustee of the College, and his firm is one of the leading law firms in New Hampshire. Through the "grapevine" we hear that John's firm is on one side or the other (never on both sides) of much of the important litigation in New Hampshire. Notwithstanding his own preeminence in Dartmouths affairs, right now he is known as the father of Charlie McLane, the famed Dartmouth ski performer.
Chester Woodbury
Graduated from the Boston University Law School in 1911, and passed his bar examinations for practice in the State of New Hampshire and Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Since that time he had maintained an office in Salem, New Hampshire and an office in the First National Bank Building, Haverhill, Mass. He makes his home in Salem. He has one son, a graduate of Boston University Law School, who is Mutual Casualty Cos., in their Manchester, N. H. office. His daughter, Eleanor T., is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire.
Chester was appointed a Special Justice of the District Court at Salem by Governor Roland Spaulding. In 1922 he formed a Cooperative Bank in Salem and has been director and counsel for that bank since that time. He was also instrumental in reorganizing the Canobie Lake Park Company, a recreation project at Canobie Lake, New Hampshire.
Chester enjoys a substantial general practice and is the only '07 lawyer actively practicing in both the State of New Hampshire and Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Jim Reilly
Graduated from Harvard Law School in 1910, and at once began practicing in Lowell in the office of James J. Kerwin, where he gradually acquired valuable experience in trial work. When the late E. P. Saltonstall became District Attorney for Middlesex County, Jim became one of his assistants. As a result of this connection, Jim was invited to join as a partner the well-known Boston firm of Gaston, Snow, Saltonstall & Hunt, now Gaston, Snow, Hunt, Rice & Boyd.
Jim handles and tries in Court many of the more important cases handled by the firm.
Jim and Mrs. Reilly have had no children, and they have always retained their home in Lowell, from which place he commutes daily to Boston.
Jim Brown
According to all reliable reports, has for years enjoyed a solid lucrative practice in his profession. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1910, and immediately began practicing with his father and brother Nelson P. Brown, with offices in Everett and Boston. After his father's death, his brother Nelson P. Brown was appointed a Judge of the Massachusetts Superior Court leaving Jim in full charge of the long established practice. Over the years Jim has constantly increased the number and importance of his clientele.
For many years Jim has been counsel for the Boston & Maine Railroad, Massachusetts Bankers Association and Massachusetts Savings Bank Life Insurance Association. When the Legislature is in session he acts as Legislative counsel for these and other important clients. His office is at 68 Devonshire Street, Boston, and he lives at 245 Summer Avenue, Reading.
Jim has a son James D. Brown, a Harvard graduate, now 24 years old, and a daughter, Carolyn, now a senior at Smith College.
