I FICTION—A History of its Criticism and aGuide for its Study, with an AnnotatedCheck List of 215 Imaginary Voyages from1700 to 1800, by Philip Babcock Gove '22,Columbia University Press, 1941. p. XIII,445. $3-50.

THIS IS A TECHNICAL STUDY of a restricted field of literature, the imaginary voyage, and is, as the author intended, a discussion and analysis of problems of bibliography and definition. It is not, as the title may mislead some into thinking, a study of the influence of the imaginary voyage on prose fiction.

In the first part of this volume, after he has discussed the indefinite use of the term "imaginary voyage," Mr. Gove gives a detailed account of the "history of critical discussion and of bibliography," and proceeds to outline the influence of "Robinson Crusoe," with emphasis on bibliography.

The second half of the volume comprises the check list mentioned in the title.
