JOHN P. ("JACK") ENGLISH '16
WITH THE LILT OF DARTMOUTH harmony still echoing in his ears John P. "Jack" English '16 left the home fires on September 2 to report for duty at Miami Beach, Florida, the following day as a Captain in the U. S. Army Air Corps.
Chorister Jack was never in better voice than at the farewell party tendered him by the Executive Committee of the Dartmouth Club of Melrose on the night of August 31st and the morning of September Ist. Of the ten members of the Committee which includes Harry Hall, President, Les King, Secretary, Walt Friend, Treasurer, Hazen Jones, Walt Pendleton, Bill Huntress, Cliff Bean, Chick Stiles, Herb Fleming, and Jack himself, only Harry Hall was too far distant to answer the call, but the other nine were under par all the way. They took them all in stride, albeit in a variety of keys, from the "Tattooed Lady" to the -Chi Phi song.
It is the second time in for Jack who had two years' active service in the last war with eighteen months overseas as a Lieutenant in the Motor Transport Corps, O. R. C.
With the exception of two years as eastern sales representative of one of the large rug and carpet manufacturers, Jack's entire post war business experience has been in the investment field wherein he has -served successively and successfully through the "ups and downs" of the nineteen twenties and thirties with the Brookmire Economic Service, Moody Investors, and -more recently with F. S. Emery and Cos. of Boston.
With Jack in service and Bob, the oldest son, a matriculated freshman at the University of Idaho, the Stoneham Englishes will still carry on the musical tradition in the persons and gifted talent of Mother "Kay," Kathleen, Jack Jr., Joanne, and Carolyn.
Richard M. Udall '23, guidance director at Melrose High School for the past seven years, has been elected principal of Patchogue High School on Long Island. Before coming to Melrose, Dick served as submaster at the Gardner High School.
Our first meeting will be held early in November. Watch for notice.
