NOTHING IN THIS MARCH ISSUE OF THE MAGAZINE is of greater importance than the summary, Financial Prospects Critical, carried on page 9. The brief article states, in general outline, the views of President Hopkins on the period of great financial stress for the College that lies ahead. Enrollment in the undergraduate body is certain to shrink greatly and the problems thus raised are serious.

Trials, Tribulations, Success page 10 is a concise account, by Ralph Sanborn '17, of the Hanover Inn under the present managers, Ford and Peggy Sayre. All Dartmouth knows and hails the remarkably fine job done by the Sayres in making the Inn a most attractive gateway to the College. Their success in closing operations for the past two years in the black merits the praise given them in the article this month. "Sunny" Sanborn wrote the story of the Inn and the Sayres at our request. He has known them since their Moosilauke Days and is a frequent visitor to Hanover in search of new Dartmouth subjects (or variations on the old) for his übiquitous camera.

Naval aviation has proved to be a popular branch of service for young alumni. Dartmouth Indians are now scouting for the fleet. The story of how they get started, and who some of them are, is told, page 14, by Lt. Plank of the Ist District Selection Board with headquarters at the Squantum (Mass.) base.

Commencement is May 10, class reunions May 15-16, the summer term of full-semester length for upperclassmen begins May 25, and freshmen may start their Dartmouth course on July 8. The schedule is on a continuous 12 months basis from here on, for the duration. The special summer term for freshmen is described on page 16.

One of Dartmouth's distinguished graduates, Dr. Just '07, a negro, died recently and we are glad to present an important appreciation of his noted scientific career, page 18. Other departments of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE will be found in this issue including the Undergraduate Chair, page 24, written this month by J. L. Farley '42, guest occupant of the Chair in the absence (Army Air Corps) of Craig Kuhn '42.

The cover this month, by George Higgins, shows the familiar desk of the Hanover Inn with a visitor welcomed by Bud Lynch, head clerk of the staff.
