ALMOST THE ENTIRE FEATURE SECTION IS DEVOTED to the War. In this mid-summer War Number there are three major subjects covered: What Can I Do? page 13, gives answers to questions on ways and means of contributing in civilian capacities to the gigantic War effort of the nation; Military Service forAlumni, page 17, by Prof. Donald L. Stone, provides specific data for those who seek opportunities and wish to know the requirements of all branches of military service; DartmouthWar Directory, page 22, lists the names of nearly 3,000 alumni who are either on duty in uniform or are doing full-time War work in Washington.

Dartmouth Joins the Navy, page 9, is a description by Charles E. Widmayer '30, director of the Dartmouth News Service and associate editor of this magazine, of the Naval Training School that opened in Hanover July 15 to give 1,000 commissioned officers an eight weeks course of indoctrination.

Also closely related to the War are the spectacular results of this year's Alumni Fund Campaign. The support that alumni are giving to the College in this most critical financial period is indispensable. Not a complete report (which will appear in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE later) but a summary of the wonderful achievements of the Fund is given on pages 11, 12.

News of the College, page 37, UndergraduateChair, 41, Outing Club notes, 42, HanoverBrowsing by Prof. H. F. West '22, page 43, and reports on athletics, 44, are regular departments appearing this month.

We are delighted to welcome back to the Board of Editors our former associate, Philip S. Marden '94, whose editorial comments are carried in Gradus Ad Parnassum, page 7.

The Cover Through the courtesy of Lt. Comdr. J. G. Willett, USNR Aviation Base at Squantum, Mass., the cover picture was made by official USN photographers. Members of the 1942 DARTMOUTH INDIAN UNIT, largest in number of any of the naval flying groups representing colleges, appear on the cover and in the group picture, page 19.
