DRESS REVIEW
October 1943

THE TOP CIVILIAN LEADERS Of the United States Navy honored Dartmouth's V-12 Unit during August with two visits that gave the Navy and Marine trainees a chance to stage the full-dress reviews depicted in the accompanying photographs. Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, who received Dartmouth's honorary LL.D. in 1941, was the first distinguished visitor, on August 5, and two weeks later, on August 18, Under Secretary James V. Forrestal '15 flew up from Washington with a Navy party to inspect the country's biggest V-12 unit.

Secretary Knox, accompanied by Mrs. Knox and her sister, came to Hanover from his summer home in Manchester, N. H., to see his first V-12 Unit. He devoted a full afternoon to visiting classrooms and inspecting dormitories, mess halls, sick bay, and athletic facilities, and also had a cordial visit with President Hopkins. At the early-evening "Colors" and review, Mr. Knox spoke briefly to the massed ranks of trainees facing him from the east side of campus, praising them for their spirit and accomplishment and advising them that nowhere in the country could they get V-12 training under more ideal conditions than at Dartmouth. After reviewing the three Marine companies and nine Navy companies, which swung past to the music of the Dartmouth V-12 Band, Secretary Knox was guest of honor at a Navy dinner at the Inn.

When Under Secretary Forrestal visited Dartmouth on August 18, he flew up from Washington in an even two hours, landing at West Lebanon in a Lockheed Navy-piloted plane. He was accompanied by Capt. John Gingrich, USN, his aide; Eugene Duffield of the Navy Department; and Frank Folsom, OPM official. The Under Secretary and his party were entertained by President Hopkins at luncheon, during which V-ia matters were thoroughly discussed. Afternoon inspection covered some of the dorms, sick bay, and the library. A special review in Mr. Forrestal's honor was held in the afternoon.

SECRETARY KNOX, with Commander Bullis and President Hopkins, watches with approving eye as the 2,000 Dartmouth V-1 2 trainees swing briskly by in their first full-dress review. The parade climaxed a day-long inspection by the Navy Secretary, who was seeing a V-1 2 Unit in operation for the first time and who, on the basis of his visit, was led to declare that he did not expect to see a finer training group anywhere in the country.
