Dartmouth's accelerated spring semester opened on Monday, January 18, with a total enrollment of 1,256 men, a drop of 815 from the number of students who started the fall term but nevertheless a better total than had been anticipated by College officials, whose advance estimates did not exceed 1,200. A great part of the shrinkage from last semester is accounted for by the December graduation of 336 seniors.
Undergraduate enrollment is made up of 65 seniors who did not finish under the accelerated schedule, 326 juniors, 382 sophomores, and 444 freshmen. Thirty-nine graduate and special students are included in the grand total.
The College thus started its socalled spring term with approximately one-half of its normal enrollment. Further reduction in the student body is expected as the semester progresses, and the College has announced that additional dormitories will be closed down as an economy move.
