Last things first this time—l'm writing these notes the day after the Boston Alumni Dinner when 15 of the 'isers and several guests set up their own reunion spot bebefore the dinner at the Copley-Plaza and later joined in with one of the best gatherings in years—a real surprise in numbers because of present transportation difficulties. But though they do roam, Boston Dartmouth Alumni get around for this once-a-year meeting and enjoyed a real Dartmouth night.
The 'lsers present were Bill Huntress, Chan Foster, Major Herb Potter from Camp Devens, Eben Clough, Ashley St. Clair, Henry Marcy, String Downing, Norv Milmore, Russ Rice, Ed Dewing, Howie Wing, Erl McAndrews, Lounsberry, johnny Johnson, Kike Richardson with Sam Wolcott as a guest, and Don Bennink, with Dennie Delaney as a guest. A lot who expected to be there missed out at the last moment, chief of whom was Walt Meader, who never misses one, but who got tossed around by a case of flu and couldn't leave his home.
A letter in this morning's mail from Sid Crawford gave me a fine newspaper picture and story of Russ Durgin's talk at the Y.M.C.A. in Worcester in a joint meeting with the Dartmouth Club of Worcester on February 2. Sid says that Russ did a great job; held his audience for two hours. He leaves at once for the West where he will make a tour, so you Westerners be looking for him.
Dick Merrill reports by letter to Bill Huntress that he is now settled in Columbus, Ohio, in his new pastorate—but he speaks of keeping his summer home in Wolfeboro, N. H„ to keep the New England ties.
A brief card from Paul Sargeant's wife tells me that Paul is, and has been since last July, State Rationing Officer under the OPA in Concord, N. H., and I guess he is busy for I have seen a lot of those boys operate. Maybe if you got stuck going to and from Hanover Paul could bail you out with a pint of gas.
The Boston luncheons on Mondays at Warmuth's have been falling off in attendance—but Bill, Eben, Chan, Dale, Walt are the regulars and will welcome any additions to the party. At 1 o'clock.
Speaking of pictures—the Boston Sunday Herald last week carried a picture of Maj. Herb Potter broadcasting from Station WEIM at Fitchburg in re the Quartermaster Corps activities in the Army. Sid Crawford rises to state that the picture must have been carefully posed, as "that bald headed old coot never looked that studious when he was solving the binomial theorem at Hanover." If this is libel make the most of it.
At the Boston dinner last night, Dolph English's son came over and spoke to ushe is in the service and was one of the many in uniform, and looked like a real soldier.
Jack Ferguson and his wife have announced the marriage of their daughter, Patricia, to Robert C. Friess of the U. S. Marines on the 10th of January at Norman, Okla.
The 'lsers who answered the card about the Boston Dinner but who didn't come, at least let us know that they were alive and we were glad to hear from them. They included: Johnny Mullin, Kell Rose, Charlie Cumisky, Dick Merrill, Adam Sutcliffe, Cece Whitney, Murray Austin, Ed Shea, Max Wilcox (who said "Yes"); Augie Atwood (also said "Yes"); Shrimp Williams, Speed Henderson, Chink Chamberlain, Casey Jones, Jack Mason, Sheldon, Duke Sullivan.
From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, I guess, they're all talking about Beards Ruml—the college office sent me a huge clipping headed up "Ruml the Man—Who is this 'unknown,' etc."and so it goes. His famous bookkeeping arrangement is getting kicked around a bit, but anyway, he may get us something.
