Probably nowhere could Paul Sample '20 have found a more critical audience than in the Apponaug, R. 1., postoffice when he hung his mural painting of the village there before an interested crowd of inhabitants. Dartmouth's artist in residence went to Apponaug a year ago and made sketches along the waterfront which, when readjusted and placed together in the six by fifteen mural, form a composite view of the village. Mr. Sample spent an entire evening hanging the picture and adding a few finishing touches while the local gentry discussed the painting, passed judgment on its accuracy, and attempted to identify the fishermen at work in the foreground. The background shows the City Hall, the Baptist Church, and the Apponaug mill, all framed by the abutments and steel frame of the railroad bridge over the cove. Art critics praise the mural for its true, deep colors and excellent detail. Mr. Sample was commissioned by the Fine Art Section of the Treasury Department to paint the mural. It is his second such project in the state of Rhode Island, for several years ago he did a mural for the postoffice at Westerly.
