The Alumni Fund is rolling well on its way now. It seems as though we've said each year that it was so important to give to the Fund to the fullest extent of our ability. It always has been important—important for the College to have funds available without any strings, to meet expenses that have always exceeded a normal income. We know now that the income that we once knew as normal has been undermined by decreased enrollment, and it therefore has become increasingly important that the Fund be supported to a greater degree than ever before.
Activities in the services continue to dominate the news. Julie Westheimer, 1st Lieut., Air Corps, who is a post exchange officer at the Army Air Base at Colorado Springs, and wife, Ernestine, announce the arrival, Feb. 20, of Patricia Helen Westheimer. Major Jim Seaver is overseas somewhere as Weather Officer of a Bomber Command. Lieut. Pete Barnet was married Feb. 18 to Eleanor Gunst of New York and Skidmore '41. Pete is at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Aviation Cadet Russ Tolles took the count February 22 with Alice Lamphier, Watertown. Margot Dethier, Bryn Mawr '42 and Lieut. Howie Fogg announced their engagement. Same goes for Denna Andreson, Worcester, and Ensign John Nassikas, except that the wedding followed closely on February 21.
Dick Woodman, aviation radioman, 3d class was awarded the Air Medal for his activities as radioman and turret gunner in a torpedo bomber during the Santa Cruz Islands battle. Charlie Moses, stationed at Lawton, Okla., is now Captain Moses. Ensign Al Hawkes has left wife, Norma, and daughter, Martha, to go with the Amphibious Force at Solomons Base. February 17 was wedding day for Lt. Rod Washburn and Jane Parker, Sweet Briar '39. Can't remember whether I said Dick Schmidt had been married. But he was, on New Year's Day, and he's polishing Master Sergeant's stripes.
Lieut. Dick Higbee is at the Ordnance Unit Training Center at Flora, Miss. Lieut. Jim Ramsay graduated from Quartermaster 0.C.5., though I haven't heard yet where he and wife Marjorie have been stationed. Phil Harty sent me a card telling me he had changed his address, but he apparently didn't think it was important to tell me what the new one was. Lieut. Bob Carroll is on sub duty. Barbara and Stearns MacNutt announce the arrival of an applicant for the class of '65, seven-and-ahalf-pound Lowell Dexter 2nd, born February 26. Already has a date for the '62 Carnival with Ellen Tower, John and Shirley's prize package. It sounds typical of Mac, arranging dates months in advance.
Ensign Jack Mcintosh writes from the Naval Training School at lowa State Teacher's announcing the prospective arrival of a son and heir, as of about September. Present accomplishments include a dog, Sophie Elizabeth, and four goldfish. Says he heard from Bill Stead, who's in Communications at Dutch Harbor. Lieut, (jg) Jack Slattery's floating address is the USSSC 715.
Having been marched and countermarched with conflicting and canceled orders, I can presume that my address soon will change, but otherwise no news of this chicken. Remember that nominations for class officers must be in Hanover in the hands of Prof. J. B. Stearns by May 15, after which the Executive Committee will attempt to arrive at a decision as to who will succeed the incumbent 8-balls. News is slim this month, but I'll make it up to you.
