My dear classmates, I have been on a real old-fashioned Dartmouth party with Zeke Hill '39 who is one of my infamous roommates now, and although personally I have nothing against an old-fashioned Dartmouth party, it is really nothing proper to set a secretary up for writing class notes. However, it is now fifty-five minutes past deadline, and I must confess that I have been fairly tardy this month in getting out the class news.
Thanks to Admiral Bob Dewey, who has forsaken his Hanover rank of admiral for that of ensign in our United States Navy, I have a spot of news for you out there on the scattered front. My family hasn't sent on the April issue of the ALUMNI MAGA- ZINE, so I must pass all responsibility for repetitions on to them. The good Admiral, now Ensign, says after four months the Navy has given up trying to teach him anything and have sent him South to pick up a ship and go on active duty. Between graduation from Notre Dame V-7, Norfolk, Washington, and Key West he has run across and up against several of our cohorts.
Indirect news, according to Bob, has 1st Looey Jim Doerr on a South Pacific Isle; Paul Torian, no longer a Marine Reserve but a captain in the regulars, in the same theatre of operations; 1st Looey Jack Zimmer in sick bay in North Carolina, having missed such a lovely assignment with the leathernecks, waiting to shove off; BenPage, who could hardly miss with a name like that, sixth out of 800 at Abbott Hall V-7 and now at a West Coast School; AlDingwall out of Abbott Hall to an advance school in New York City; Matt Rapf out of V-7 Abbott Hall; Dick Remsen out of V-7 Columbia, now in an advanced school in Miami, along with Black Jack Corwith, which facts have been verified by your correspondent; Pete Peterson in and out of New York, also verified by your correspondent who has run into Pete across the street occasionally; Warren Kreter in and out of Norfolk and coaching a "plenty tough ship's ball team"; Bill Donovan, lieutenant in the Signal Corps now in the South Pacific; Hal Eckardt in the Navy as an observation squadron flyer; Jim Ingersoll and Johnny Storrs subchasers in the Atlantic; Stub Pearson and Bob Kirk as dive bombers; Dick Higgins and Will Gray as fighters; Bobby Riggs as a patrol flyer; and Lindy DiFabio as a gunnery officer in the Navy. My thanks to the Ensign-Admiral for so much news. It was a life saver.
Gutz Curtis, now an ensign on what I suspect is submarine duty—yours truly suspecting merely because of Subject's sizewrites, along with a handsome contribution to the Alumni Fund, that he ran into Ensign Phil Moon at an East Coast port and that he has seen a lot of Bob Strasenburgh who is giving the gals at a certain Eastern college a run for their money. Gutz, incidentally, is ready about to announce his engagement.
Dutch Schafer writes that he is now in an Army Air Corps Navigation school in Texas. Another letter from Phil Locke's father tells me that Phil was commissioned second lieutenant, Shavetail to all you railbirds, in the Army Transportation Corps and is now at an Eastern station, that leads me to believe he is due for a ride.
Another letter from Pete Link says, after complaining he couldn't find me in New York City, that he is about due to set sail. Pete is in the Air Corps, in case you have forgotten since last month. And I picked up via a New York paper that Gene Hoch has announced his engagement. I'm sincerely sorry that I don't have his fiancee's name. It will be along in the next issue.
The rest, I am sorry to admit, is strictly OWI stuff. Being definitely anti-New Deal and proud of it, it is some come down. RogHaley has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps at Columbus, Ga Jim Ban has announced his engagement to Jean Howard of Walpole, Mass Joe Tobin has announced his engagement to another Howard, Miss Jone-Lough Howard of Chatham, N. J. .... Lieut. Frank Garran USNR, was married on May 2nd to Sarah Delahanty of Hanover George Clark, at this writing an Officer Candidate in the Army, has announced his engagement to Miss Louise Wild of Winchester, Mass News has it that Dave Sills is still with the ski troops, which makes Dutton's news of two months ago about right.
Johnny Chandler is now in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania DukeFrieman has begun primary training in his Naval aviation course. He is now in Oklahoma Ensign Peter Arnott has announced his marriage to Martha Wood of Atlantic Highlands, N. J Captain Robinson Minnick USA has announced his engagement to Jane Simmons of Staunton, Va Rollie Temble has announced his marriage to Mary Jane Roberts of West Englewood, N. J., on February 4 .... and Ensign Ad Winship has announced his engagement to Christine Hill of Andover, Mass.
Which is all I have at this time, gentlemen. Will be waiting to hear from you, if I am still in a position to when this reaches you.
