The members of the class are saddened by the news of the death from a heart attack on March 5, 1945 of Albert (Tommy) Melvin in Orleans, Mass., at the home of a sister, Mrs. Richard L. Mayo. Albert was a former instructor at Robert College in Turkey. Funeral services were held on March 9 at the Adams Funeral Home in Derry. Burial was in Chester, N. H. He had a stroke of thrombosis in November 1944, which partially destroyed the use of his right side.
Albert was born in Chester, February 25, 1883, the son of John and Maud (Smith) Melvin. Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Horace T. Brockway of South Hadley, Mass., Mrs. Mayo, Mrs. Walter C. Mandell of West Hartford, Conn., Mrs. Howard G. Moody and Mrs. Charles N. Tibbetts, both of Derry. The sympathy of the class is extended to his five sisters.
I regret that I had not seen Albert since our last Reunion in Hanover when he rode down with me to Concord. At the Reunion and on the trip down I was impressed by his cheerfulness and sweetness of disposition in spite of the slings and arrows of an outrageous fortune which was his lot.
Shirley B. Cunningham was chairman of the Finance and Tickets Committee for the "1000 Dinner" of Dartmouth Alumni, held at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York on March 26, 1945. Stanley Besse, connected with Weed and Kennedy Cos., was the '05 class representative. President Hopkins and Cap tain Damon L. Cummings, Commanding Officer of the Navy V-12 Unit in Hanover, gave very interesting addresses.
It'is hoped that all will respond generously to Sliver Hatch's appeal for the Alumni Fund.
George W. Putnam, assistant Principal of Montclair (N. J.), High School, has been named general chairman of the Seventy-fifth Anniversary Celebration of the First Congregational Church of Montclair, scheduled for June 2 and 3. George is a member of the board of deacons of the Congregational Church. He has been connected with Montclair High School since 1909, first as a teacher of Latin and Greek, and since 1927 as assistant principal. We suggest that Walter Emery attend the anniversary exercises as a representative of the class.
Congratulations to Henry K. Norton on his election to a directorship of the First National Bank of Paterson, N. J.
Our Far Western Representative, Walter Nourse, from that region of California, where Robert Frost records in his poem, New Hampshire, that they build cemeteries to vindicate the State's humanity, had a delightful lunch recently with Vernon Biggs and a telephone conversation with Harry Lill. Vernon has been in the real estate business in Chicago and Los Angeles. He is now in the auditing department of the U. S. Engineers. Vernon is reported in the best of health as is Harry Lill. They both live in Glendale, Calif.
Vernon's daughter Betty was recently married to Robert Channon of Los Angeles. Congratulations to Robert and Mrs. Channon. Walter Nourse is planning to teach again at New York University next summer.
If the May Number of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE reaches you before May n, let it be a reminder that you are going to miss a fine reunion if you do not attend the Annual Five Classes ('01-'05) Dinner at Schraffts' Restaurant. President Rufus Day will probably be present and another speaker o£ national prominence will give the address. The local 'O5 representative is Bob Harding, who has contributed much to the success of similar dinners in the past.
Any suggestions for the proposed 'O5 Picnic on May 12?
