Vicarious fifteenth reunions were held in several of the more or less populous centers of Thirtymen, during the month of June. The reports received indicate that the boys (and girls) had very enjoyable gatherings and the pictorial evidence which is submitted with these notes give adequate proof. The pictures also seem to testify that some changes have taken place in the intervening years since the tribe convened in Hanover in 1940.
The Boston affair took place on the fourteenth of June, at the Boston Yacht Club, and we give you Alex McFarland's description of it:
We had one of the better Boston 1930 dinners last night, notwithstanding that some of the old standbys were necessarily absent. Those present were as follows: Ted and Ida Childs, Red and Elizabeth Doherty, Ed Schuster, Boof and Billie Perkins, George Frederickson, Doc Waters, Hal and Bernice Kaplan, Gordon Hoxie, Jack Rich, John Whipple, Don Hight, Bob Burns, Frank and Edith Leahy, Sam Butler, Herb and Marjorie Chase, "Dean" Mary Wiggin, Sylvia Trowt, and Alex and Caroline McFarland.
The only official action taken, subject to routine confirmation at the next official gathering of the class as a whole, was the election of Sylvia Trowt as an honorary member of the class. (Ed. note.... Miss Trowt is Alex's secretary and a real asset to the class through her efficient work on the Alumni Fund.)
The group picture isn't bad for those whose faces were exposed to the camera, but the dumb photographer didn't have the folks lined up correctly and as a result three of the girls can't be seen.
A photographer from Bob Keene's studios took the picture of the New York group and Bob supervised the operation so that everyone shows up clearly. The two fellows down in the front, not to be outdone by Carl Haffenreffer at previous reunions (although they could not furnish "rich, creamy, mellow"), supplied the beer for the post-dinner festivities at the Dartmouth Club, which also took place June 14. There were thirty-three of us present, the largest gathering since General Hershey began his operations. Those present are named in the caption under the New York group photo.
The only official action taken at the New York dinner was the election of Lt. Bill Jessup, the only man there in uniform, as president of the "U.S.S. Thirty." We were glad to welcome to New York Johnny Marsh, who is now with the National Steel Co., of Brazil, and Walla Poorman, formerly with the Standard Oil Co., of Louisiana, and now with Standard Oil of New Jersey.
A brief memorial service was held for the following classmates who have passed on since our Tenth Reunion: Bill Klamroth, Fred Johnson, John Toland, Nels Galbraith, Phil Waterman, Pudge Hartmann, Warren Parish, Ken Kull, Ben Finch, Ed Bohman and John Bradley. Further notice of the deaths of the last two will appear in the In Memoriam section of this, or a later, issue.
Win Stone wrote a fine letter about the Washington get-together which lack of space compels us to hold until another issue.
Ted Childs, who was at the Boston dinner, left New York to become superintendent of the Brockton Hospital.
George Morris intended to be at the New York dinner, but had to go out to Oklahoma to fly back a bunch of surplus aircraft for the Westchester County Airport. Fran Horn's new assignment is to serve as assistant to the director of the Army University Center, or Academic Division Center, which originally was planned to be established at Fontainebleau, but now scheduled for some other congenial spot.
We have just received word that Lt. Col. George Sarles, Marine Air Corps, has been reported missing in action, probably in the Philippines. George had received the Legion of Merit for service on Guadalcanal, and we sincerely hope that this report will be followed by better news of his safe return.
