With the 1946 collection of $416,000 the Alumni Fund distinctly moved into the realm of Big Business. Even though the Hanover hand at the wheel has changed, the dollars will come rolling along. The Dickerson Dynasty has been succeeded by the Colton Cabal but that means no escape for any Alumnus. It is realized by few that this College financial life saving device was started by the Class of '90. It was Hilton's idea that was the seed from which this fine tree grew. His suggestion for a Tucker Fund was adopted and conducted from 1906 to 1914. During that period there was collected a total of $31,893.89. Then came the erection of the present machine with a hand picked Fund Council, an outstanding grad as Fund Chairman, and the designation of class agents to do the personal pocket picking. Also, the creation of an executive secretary whose powers are what he chooses to make them. So in the onward march of this financial crusade there should not be forgotten its parentage, the Class of '90 and its Hilton.
The tour of Gerould to Texas last summer was a great change for a gentleman who is dedicated to keeping the home fires burning. He motored to the big state and there saw Stephen Chase, Jr. '25 do some skillful horse training, and renewed acquaintance with grandchildren. He returned to New York by plane, and then enjoyed the hospitality of our Dr. Boynton at his Connecticut summer estate.
In my Senior year I was the President of the Dartmouth Lecture Association. I remember the time and thought its officers gave to making the list of events for that winter to entertain and give wholesome advice to the student body. I was, therefore, surprised to note that the leading event of what is now termed the Lecture Series was a lecture by Professor Max Lerner. That gentleman is the chief editorial writer on "PM," most radical daily newspaper in the United States, except the Communist "Daily Worker." And to an audience of over one thousand at Hanover he made this statement: "No Republican has the stature for leadership which we need in America, and no Democrat has the national stature either." That means, logically and inevitably, that real American leadership must come from either the Socialist or Communist Party. Something of a change from the '90 days and a long jump to the left.
Mrs. Moses spent part of the summer in the White Mountains. Young George, the grandson, is now a Dartmouth student. He was released from the Navy just in time to enter College for the summer term. Her older granddaughter has gone to the University of New Hampshire, and the younger one has just entered High School. With the son a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, this certainly gives the Moses family a wide scholastic range.
