I am sorry to have to report again this month the death of another classmate, Arthur Bedell. He died as a result of a heart attack at his home, 378 Wellington Road, Delmar, N. Y.
"Bedelia" had a very interesting life. On leaving college he went to Roberts College, Istanbul, Turkey, where he was professor of mathematics and registrar until 1916. He then was associated with the Utah State Department of Health until 1917 when he became instructor in Public Health at the Albany Medical School. He then returned to Turkey where he was associate professor of Civil Engineering at Roberts College from 1917 to 1921. He was a charter member of the New York State Sewage Works Association and served as secretary-treasurer for twenty years. At the time of his death he was associate sanitary engineer in the New York State Health Department. Bedelia was a very quiet sort of fellow and had the respect of everyone who knew him. All the notices of his death speak of him as a calm, sweet-tempered gentleman and they all have lost a good friend and valuable adviser. This statement also expresses the sentiment of his classmates of 1909.
Curt Sheldon is certainly a good politician as well as an excellent public servant. On April 9 he was re-elected and sworn in for the fourteenth two-year term as City Treasurer of New Britain, Conn. A Democratic Mayor was elected at the same time Curt was, unopposed, and appeared as candidate for both Democratic and Republican parties.
George Adams writes me that he made a call on Phil Chase and his wife a few weeks ago, and found him to be the same cheerful person, while he is still having a pretty tough time because of his health. He is up and about but has to remain at home and be very careful of himself. His older son was in Dartmouth before the war and has now returned to resume his studies. His younger son expects to be drafted soon.
Francis (Tubby) Bird, who has been professor and head of the Department of Commerce at the College of Engineering and Commerce, University of Cincinnati, since 1925, has just been recently appointed Dean of the University's new College of Business Administration. "Tubby" probably wouldn't like to have some of his students know this but I never hear his name mentioned that I don't think of the reunion when we had the beer party across the river. Some members of other classes disguised themselves and came in to break up the party. We all started to run for home and while running up the hill the only thing Tubby could think of was that his name was on the kegs! He seems to have done pretty well in spite of that.
Joe and Dot Worthen spent a day at the Inn recently and had a most enjoyable time. The Inn is trying hard to get more of the old graduates to go back to look the situation over.
