JOHN AND CHRISTINA DICKEY arrived in San Francisco November 24, 1946, a beautiful, sunny day. It was John's first visit here as President of Dartmouth College, having been here formerly with the United Nation's Conference in quite a different capacity. It was Mrs. Dickey's first visit West and she found many other Wellesley. and Simmons girls settled here and more would have enjoyed seeing her.
The class of '29 went into action at once, showing the Dickeys scenic spots of San Francisco and the famous Skyline Drive down the Peninsula to the Robin residence where Dick and Helen assisted by other Palo Alto '29ers played hosts for the next 24 hours—a Sunday evening reception permitted many Dartmouth men and their wives to meet and appreciate the Dickeys as those who have known them for many years always appreciate them.
The following day another reception given by Mrs. Leavens and Bob '01, in Berkeley permitted many of the East Bay Dartmouth families to become acquainted with our new President and his wife, who following the reception dined with Mrs. Selden Smith, family, and guests. Again, special thanks from the Dartmouth men and ladies.
The next day found our President the guest of Dr. W. W. Washburn '14, our Alumni Councillor, at the Bohemian Club, surrounded by Bay Area educators and other friends. At the same time, Mrs. Dickey lunched with Mrs. Washburn at nearby Franciscan Club. By Tuesday evening, President Dickey had met many but not all who were to attend the big dinner given in his honor at the University Club. Incidentally, he had passed the cold (which he had picked up prior to arriving here) along to Mrs. Dickey, while he addressed the Alumni group—120 strong—at the University Club adjoining the Hotel Mark Hopkins where Mrs. Dickey nursed said cold (a fine way for the Dickeys to celebrate their wedding anniversary). The attendance represented 43 classes, all the way from Hayt '78, to Frerichs '46, with 100% laurels going to the class of 1929, who had all ten members in this vicinity on hand to support their classmate.
However, John Dickey needs no special support, all he needs is attention. His opening remarks seemed to pave the way for that and the gang were ready. After his introduction by Association President Howland '34, he was granted, as he termed it, a short "reprieve" through an interruption by Bill Washburn to read his "Ode to a New President." Dickey outlined Dartmouth's problems and objectives clearly and concisely. There is no question about arriving at our goal through the leadership of this new President, who goes about his work quietly, steadily but with plenty of foresight and power to see a job well done, not forgetting a goodly sense of humor. Those in attendance, biggest number in the history of the Association, Dartmouth men, six boys who hope to go to Dartmouth and three dads, gave every evidence of their endorsement of our College Trustees' selection. In the words of one Bill Wright '18, Deeth, Nevada, "Sorry cannot be with you in San Francisco. Heard Dickey in New York last March—He is good!"
On the following day, the regular Wednesday luncheon was sponsored by the DOC of Northern California. President Pete Talbot '38 outlined progress of our High Sierra Donner Summit project where a cabin has recently been completed. President Dickey's comments on DOC activities in Hanover and his interest in our little deal were most appreciated, also productive in that the boys picked up another good non-resident member. Welcome, John.
Wednesday evening the Dickeys were on their way to the Southland—good luck to John and Chris!
