THE DARTMOUTH CLUB of Bridgeport held a regularly scheduled dinner meeting on Thursday night, December 5, at the University Club. Dave Camerer '37, sports editor of Pic magazine, came up from his home in North Stamford, Conn., to speak to us. Dave spoke at some length on the present football situation in Hanover and worked himself up into giving a most interesting talk. Dave was of the opinion that all criticism of Dartmouth's recent disastrous football season should not be leveled at Coach Tuss McLaughry, about whom he had many good things to say. He was outspoken in his remarks about some of the things that Tuss has had to contend with and pointed out the universal respect in which Tuss is held by football men in the East. Dave expressed the personal opinion that a man like Tuss should remain at Dartmouth but not necessarily in the role of head football coach. When pressed to name his own candidate for Dartmouth football leader, Dave mentioned Andy Gustafson, former Big Green backfield coach who now fills the same job for Earl Blaik at West Point. He concluded by stating that Dartmouth alumni do not want a super team in any sense of the word but that they wanted, and had a right to expect, a team that would never look extremely mediocre in losing. A recurring point throughout his talk was the fact that returning servicemen on the squad have created many special coaching problems.
The meeting had another highlight in the installation of new club officers: President, Al Jennings '33; Vice President, Jack Zellers '28; Treasurer, Ralph Sperry '39; and Secretary, Bob Stearns '38.
