"Brownie" Brown, writing from Louisville, said, "Yes, I came down here to get away from northern blizzards." (And you may be sure, Brownie, that you have really escaped plenty of snow.) On December 1, Brownie was transferred from Glens Falls as the Manager of the Louisville office of the Glens Falls Indemnity Company, the Louisville office covering both Kentucky and Tennessee. Brownie says that he and his family like the country down there very much, probably due to the fact that they were lucky enough to find a comfortable house shortly after arrival. Brownie has heard stories of the "Derby" and says he's not sure what the attraction is—fast horses, pretty gals or good bourbon,—but that he will send further reports when he investigates the matter.
On November 29, The Montpelier (Vt.) Argus, in a fine state of confusion, carried the following headline: "Putnam, Dean Emeritus of Dartmouth, a Suicide." The story had reference to the Dean Bill case, in which BillPutnam figured as the medical referee, but Bill has continued very much alive. A few days later Bill was in the Hanover news again as medical referee in a case of hanging by a local Hanoverian. Doctoring in the North Country is not so dull! "Cupe" Burns took a hurried trip through the East during November on behalf of Consolidated Flour Mills in Wichita, Kansas, and during the course of his travels ran into Walt Rosenberry momentarily in Chicago, saw Joe Placak in Cleveland, and managed to talk on the telephone with EdButterworth in Lynn and Bob Rix in Goffstown, New Hampshire.
On a hurried trip to Washington, D. C., during the latter part of December, I was fortunate enough to be able to catch Harry Casler for a couple of hours, which he spared from his highly active duties with the State Department. Although you might little suspect it of a Washingtonian, and a red-mustached one at that, Harry well knows the trials and tribulations of a dirt farmer from his experiences on his farm located just north of Washington. Dud Day was recently elected Secretary of All-America Cables & Radio, Inc., an operating subsidiary of the American Cable & Radio Corp. Dud is also continuing as Assistant Secretary of International Telephone & Telegraph Corp., with which American Cable & Radio is affiliated.
Thanks to an article in The, BostonTraveler by Arthur Siegel, we have ilearned that author, after-dinner speaker, baseball and hockey coach, Eddie Jeremiah, has received new and unexpected laurels.'.Siegel rfemarks that Eddie is now being called "the Great Dane of Hockey." The story goes that a Danish hockey player received from his brother in New York a copy of Eddie's book, Ice Hockey. The Dane passed the Sook around among the fellow members of his hockey club, called the "Copenhagen Skating Club," and apparently the Danes were so enthusiastic over Eddie's instructions that the captain of the team wrote Eddie saying that they had pronounced him coach of their team. Apparently the Danes experienced somewhat the same troubles as Eddie did in Hanover, for the letter read in part, "There is no artificially rink in Denmark, we play on naturally ice, and some years we have no ice." After advising Eddie that they had bought twenty copies of his book, the letter concluded, "We hope that we all will be 'heady players' after this." Arthur Siegel summarized Eddie's reaction and the significance of the letter, which Siegel's article quoted in full, in the following words:
"All this came as a surprise to Jeremiah, who has used the word Danish as applying only to pastry, who has known Copenhagen only as a snuff and Denmark as only a place that somebody said was rotten in. Furthermore, the aforesaid Jeremiah has known Nordic as something applied only to Hanover temperatures. And although he is the coach of the national intercollegiate hockey champions, coach of the co-champions of North America and coach of the national A. A. U; champions, Jeremiah, now also called. 'Snuffy can add one more title, that of being the bookcoach of the hockey champions of Denmark and, undoubtedly of the Danish representatives at St. Moritz."
