IN ITS EFFORTS to provide the extra operating income so vital to the College, the 1948 Alumni Fund Campaign in its early stages was ahead of comparative figures last year as to the number of contributors, but slightly behind in the total amount of gifts. By April 16 the Fund had received 2,642 contributions as compared to 2,352 on the same date in 1947. Total gifts received amounted to $96,664.51 as compared with the $97,627.03 of a year ago. Several large gifts were included in the 1947 total, however.
The opening Fund mailing piece, which pointed out the need for maintaining Dartmouth's current operations at the highest quality, was well received and may have accounted for the early response by a greater number of contributors. The goal of the 1948 Alumni Fund is $375,000, approximately the sum by which student income and return on endowments will fall short of expenses this fiscal year.
