The American Academy in Rome recently announced the award of five Fellowships in Classical Studies for 1948-1949. One of the five—which are awarded on evidence of ability and achievement and are open to any citizen of the United States,— a Research Fellowship, was awarded to Dr. Arthur E. Gordon '23. Dr. Gordon, now associate professor of Latin at the University of California, spent the years 1923-1925 at the American Academy in Rome as a fellow of Dartmouth.
The Research Fellowships are aimed at mature scholars, preferably those actively teaching, especially in contributing institutions—both Dartmouth and the University of California are such. The Fellowship recipients, also, must have already initiated a program of work which they can complete in Rome. While there, Mr. Gordon will continue his work in the field of Latin epigraphy, the study of Latin inscriptions.
Accompanied by his wife, he will leave New York about September 1, and after visiting England and France, will arrive in Rome about October 1.
