Tucker Letters Wanted
To THE EDITOR:
Among the alumni of Dartmouth who knew William Jewett Tucker, President of the College from 1893 to 1909, there may be many who have in their possession letters which they received from Dr. Tucker during his lifetime.
There are sufficient reasons why the owners of these letters should regard them as cherished possessions: very likely they are in Dr. Tucker's handwriting; they probably contain messages of personal interest characteristic of the man as he is remembered; they are valued simply because they came from him and are tangible reminders of his concern for every member of the Dartmouth family.
It is hoped that alumni and others, who do have letters from Dr. Tucker, may be willing to send copies to be added to the Tucker collection in the Dartmouth College Library. Typed or handwritten copies will be received with appreciation. Photostat copies will be still better. Best of all would be the original letters, if the owners should see fit to send them as gifts to the Library, to be kept in the Archives Room, available to any who might wish to see them.
This request is made with the approval of the Assistant Librarian, Harold G. Rugg 'O6, and by courtesy of the Editor of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
Copies of letters from Dr. Tucker, or the letters themselves, may be sent, preferably by registered mail, to
Dartmouth College Library Prof. Harold G. Rugg Hanover, New Hampshire.
Hanover, N. H.
First Rifle Team?
To THE EDITOR:
A mere stripling of the class of '30 should go back further than his own memory to hail a "first rifle team" as of 1929. (ALUMNI MAGAZINE, May 1948, p. 16.)
As a freshman in 1910 I shot on what may have been the first rifle team. Charlie Proctor and Leland Griggs can bear witness.
I wouldn't be sure that 1910 was the first year. Dave Davidson 'l3 and Jim Byrnes 'l3 were the organizers and they may have shot in 1909. We all received our early training in the P.S.A.L. in New York City. A 1 Richmond 'l4 and Jack Field 'l4 were also members.
Bethpage, N. Y.
P.S. We won no championship.
ED. NOTE: The earliest reference to a rifleteam found in the College archives is May 7,1910. On November 14, 1909, however, a Dartmouth Gun Tearn had a match with Harvard.
