As it inevitably must, the old summer is reluctantly drawing to a close, and I find myself once more thinking of yet another year of school and of these monthly notes. I'm afraid I may be more or less out of contact with class news at the moment as I have been spending this whole summer working in the Grand Teton Mountains of Western Wyoming, but there seems to be enough information at hand to fill the column, at least partially. Judging by the file of clippings sent by the Alumni Records Office in the Ad Building, it looks as though Old Man Cupid has kept up through the summer the rapid pace set by him among the members of the class last year.
So let's start off by taking a discreet walk down Matrimonial Row. Dave Miller, just before graduation this past June, became engaged to Miss Ellen Wales of Abington, Mass. Ellen's a swell gal, and is a senior at Wheelock College. I don't know of the immediate future plans of the two, but Dave will enter N.Y.U. Bellevue Medical School this fall.
Bob Hillier became engaged way last April to Miss Marion Albinson of East Paterson, N. J. They planned to be wed in August. Both are working for the Von Lengerke Buick Company in Paterson.
Foster DeGiacomo in June became engaged to Miss Nancy Di Maggio of Cambridge, Mass. She is a Burdett College graduate, while he, in addition to his Dartmouth education, is now studying at Boston University. A fall marriage is planned.
Jack Mack last May became the groom-to-be of the Queen of Osiris of this year's Memphis Cotton Carnival, Miss Jeanne Clifton. She has completed her junior year at Vanderbilt, where Jack is attending the Law School. I'm sorry my information is so scanty, but I believe the wedding was planned for this past summer. "
Bill Campbell and Miss Jean Elizabeth Smith of Worcester, Mass. were married this past June. She is a Mt. Holyoke grad and has been a member of the Burnham School faculty in Northampton for two years. Bill works for Botany Mills, Passaic, N. J., and the couple is now living in Montclair.
Another June wedding was that of DavePackard and the former Miss Virginia Thompson. The event took place in Westfield, N. J. The bride is a graduate of Virginia Intermont Junior College.
Herb Shulman also took the inevitable step in June. In no less a place than the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in N.Y.C., he married the former Miss Barbara Jaffe of Fall River, Mass. Immediately after the ceremony the couple went on their honeymoon to Bel Air, Calif, and since then have been living in Fall River. Marve Axelrod was one of Herb's ushers at the event.... at the wedding. Oh, by the way, had some plans of his own for the summer, but of the actual developments I have no information.
Ronnie Spiers was also a June groom. He married in Peru, Vt., the former Miss Patience Baker of South Londonderry, Vt. She studied at Wellesley, and the couple will now live in Princeton, N. J., where Ronnie is working on his Master's.
And here is one on which we're late. RoyWilson on November 13, 1948, married E. Frances Loring, a member of the Class of '48 at Mt. Holyoke. Since then, Roy has been teaching and coaching at the Randolph Central School, Randolph, N. Y. This past summer, however, the couple went to St. Lawrence Univ. in Canton, N. Y. to work toward advanced degrees.
Phil Viereck and his wife, Sarah, have apparently had quite an adventurous summer. They were planning to drive from their home in New Bedford, Mass., to their future home in Alaska. They were going via the Alcan Highway, and thus should have seen some of the last real wilderness country on the continent .... 1500 miles of it.
Fran Hummel has joined the professional ranks and is now on the business faculty of Massachusetts University. Fran graduated from Tuck last June. Don Drescher is now training supervisor at the Sears, Roebuck establishment in Asbury Park, N. J. He says he's supposed to teach the operations to guys who have been in the business for twenty years, but clearly expresses doubt about his being able to do so.
Maurie Levy is now Doctor M. Noel Levy Jr. and is on the surgical service of the Boston City Hospital. Nice going. Charlie Kaufman is assistant manager of the W. T. Grant Co. store in Framingham, Mass. Keep it up, Charlie. Tom Campbell is a methods accountant with the Telephone Cos. and lives in Brooklyn. Foxie Parker, who graduated from Thayer last June, is now an engineering trainee with the Grumman Aircraft Corp., Bethpage, N. Y. Bernie Somers is a chemist with Central Laboratories, Hoboken, N. J. Bill Fitzpatrick is working for B. F. Goodrich in Waco, Texas.
"Fink" Finkelday was working here in the Tetons most of the summer, and was climbing the peaks when he wasn't working. He just couldn't seem to resist the pull of the crap tables in the famous old gambling town of Jackson, however. Lan Macartney was here one week-end during the summer, and has since gone to the vicinity of Great Slave Lake in northern Canada where he is doing geological mapping for the Stanolind Oil Co. Mac is really moving around in this old world .... first South America, and now Canada.
Dirk Kuzmier spent the summer in France. He and his cousin Dave went over to get a more intimate look at the famous French culture. Dirk's long been known for his linguistic abilities, and wanted to prove that he speaks the French girls' language. Bob Reynolds, whom we did not know was married, stayed at Hanover Inn on June 19. He and his wife make their home in Ridley Park, Pa. TedTichletj who teaches at Vermont Academy, also stayed at the Inn at about the same time.
Well, my pencil's running out of lead and so's my imagination, so I guess I'll knock off for a while. Any of you guys who will, drop me a line, a postcard (only 1 cent), anything. Let me have the news, even if its only that you're alive. And let me have it if you're dead, too. So long for now. See you in Turkey.
