At this time of year, the spotlight of alumni activities is pointed at the many men who give freely of their time to interview candidates for admission to Dartmouth. Among those Fifteeners who labor, most of the time without the recognition they deserve, as Chairmen of Interviewing Committees are FreddyPearce, Alumni Councilor from District of Virginia, Dale Barker, Dick Clark, and AISherman. From the Class of 1915, gentlemen, may I offer a Wah-Hoo-Wah for your loyal and unselfish efforts.

Doodles Gish writes that he had lunch with Phil Murdoch recently and has run into JohnHealy at the Club. Saw the Princeton game, but no Fifteeners. Also saw John and JeanMullin, who had just returned from a couple of weeks in balmy Florida. Doodle's heir to the Gish millions, his boy Mike, is finishing up at Dartmouth this year and his daughter Helen entered Wellesley last Fall as a member of the Class of 1952.

A grand letter from Harlan Wilson gives a secretary a boost in morale, when busy men like Harlan can take the time to answer a rambling letter. I quote from it as follows:

"My most interesting experience of the last ten years was the privilege of heading up the American Hospital in Britain in 1942 at Oxford. This was a hospital unit that was organized at the invitation of British orthopedic surgeons and which took care, largely, of British soldiers and civilians injured in bombing raids. We had a wonderful experience, not the least of which was the privilege of living in Oxford and coming in contact with the University and its Colleges. I was given an honorary fellowship in Exeter College, Oxford, and enjoyed all of the privileges thereof greatly, while there.

Besides being head of the department of orthopedic surgery in the College of Medicine, Ohio State University, I am chairman of the State Medical Advisory Committee on the treatment of cerebral palsy; chairman of the medical division of the local chapter of the Poliomyelitis Foundation and chief consultant to the Division of Rehabilitation of the State of Ohio. I also happen to be chairman of District Five of the College of Surgeons and head of the Fracture Committee of that District.

My most interesting experience of the past year was participation in a fishing trip in the Laurentide National Park, north of Quebec, incidental to a meeting of the American Orthopedic Association in Quebec last May. Five of us stayed at a lodge called Porte de L'Enfer. It was still late winter there but the fish were beginning to rise and one had no difficulty in getting one's "take" of trout from a canoe with guides. The experience was delightful and the quarters good. One even had to draw on one's college French to be understood, as no one up there spoke English. I may not have gotten a good grade in French, but I sure did make myself understood.

My son, who graduated from Dartmouth two years ago, is now in surgical training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and is, therefore, following his father's footsteps."

George Simpson sends in news of the boys: "Saw the Jerry Shaws at the Harvard game. On one of my trips to Springfield ran in to see Paul Vining and Clark in the Springfield Safe Deposit & Trust Co. Also stopped in to Ray King's office for a half hour's chat. Ray is sure a marvel with seven daughters. Bill andMarian Huntress have a television set, so Charlotte and I avail ourselves of their hospitality. Can't go for the women wrestlers, though. Run into the regular Patten customers, Barker, Duke Sullivan, Henderson, and Kike Richardson. Johnny Johnson lunched with us last week, looking hale and hearty." Speaking of Johnny reminds me of the dandy Xmas card he sent out this year.

Jack Mason drops a note to say that he saw Russ Livermore and Bob Griffin at the Princeton game.

Evidently many of you bought the December Red Book to read about Bob Guest. JohnLoomis took time out to write him a nice letter of congratulation as perhaps some of you did. My tip came from Bobby Bigelow.

Cloughie sends in his life-saving news. He visited Chink Chamberlain before Christmas and learned that the Chamberlains were sailing soon after on the S.S. America for a cruise to South America. His son is working for his Ph.D. at M.I.T. Understand that JohnnyBache-Wiig spent the Fall hunting and fishing the Maine wilds. Johnny has two boys at the University of Maine. Stick Parnell is now a resident of Manchester and writes that he enjoys the sun porch on his new home. LeonTuck came out of hiding to join the boys at Patten's. Also Jack Bowler escaped from the hills long enough to take in the luncheon. The Cloughs spent the holidays with friends on Long Island. Walt Meader was successfully operated on recently and is now feeling fine. Via Chan Foster, a short note from Bob Fredericks, to say that he is still plugging away for Bell Telephone and runs into Ralph Brown occasionally.

During the Thanksgiving holidays your Secretary was pleased to receive a visit from Wee Willie Daniel's oldest daughter Virginia, who is interning at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital as a Medical Technician. Danny has a very charming daughter, but of course knowing Dan, we will have to give credit to the distaff side of the family. Kidding aside, Dan, Doris and I really enjoyed her short visit.

I had another curious experience last Fall when I went up to Hanover for one of the football games. Drove up to Littleton on Sunday and on the way back, picked up a young man who was looking for a ride. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and in the course of conversation casually mentioned that his father was a graduate of Dartmouth in the Class of 1915. His father happened to be Augi'e Atwood.
